2008 Mini cooper

2008 Mini cooper

Have a intermittant problem with indicators not going off .I put the key in start the motor and the left indicator indicates by itself but will not turn off.

Any ideas what the cause could be.

Its a blinking nuisance but joking aside,the indicators will not turn off on the indicator stick.
They do eventually make up their own mind when to stop anything between 10 minutes and 30 minutes.

They are blinking when the stalk is in the off position as opposed to the stalk not returning to the off position when you straighten the wheels?
