I've always been puzzled. I'm probably being really dense but what's the significance....

Pete Townshend was born and brought up in Lower Shitterton, Lincs., where a localised magnetic anomaly actually caused all compasses to read incorrect by +91.7 degrees (increasing by 12' per annum since 1956 so now actually +101.5 degrees). Hence the North side of the town was facing East, etc.

Good story, but it is true that the Magnetic poles on the earth do occasionally swap over! doubt it's going to happen any time soon, maybe in the next 10,000 years or so. I think.

You can be in the North of a town and face any direction you like - doesn't necessarily have to have anything to do with local magnetic anomolies.

North of a town doesn't actually face in any direction anyway - it's dependent on what's being referred to, e.g. south-facing garden, north-facing patio, etc.
