Has anyone else noticed the reduction in the noise of the latest, 68 plate, BMW M4 Competition Pack exhaust?

I have been fortunate, due to my wife's employment, to lease a 67 plate, then an 18, and now a 68 plate. I get to change every six months. My love of the car, is not only the outstanding performance, but the pop's and crackle's, from the exhaust. That was the case, until having the 68 plate, the one with the red starter button.

The noise has gone. It is such a shame. Hearing the exhaust snarl and pop after lifting the accelerator, was one of the attractions. I know that sounds like I use it as a boys, toy, but I am sure most will agree, that one of the reasons to spend money on cars, is for that reason, alone. I am aware that it has been reduced, due to emissions, but feel the essence of the car has been lost. So much so, that if I had known, I would have chosen something different. The only way to make it sound louder, is to have it in the M2 setting, which means turning the traction off, which can be fun, but also scary. The other annoying change, is the droning of the engine sound that is being sent through the speaker system. It is just terrible in my opinion. The two previous ones, did not have this.

I know I am in a fortunate position to change cars regularly, but if there are people out there, contemplating purchasing a 68 plate, over a 67, or 18 plate, I would consider this, before making the decision.

Not 100% sure on this (going off of my 68 plate M2 Comp). But i imagine the reduction in noise are the new petrol particulate filters that new cars in the EU must have. M2 Comps are much louder in America than EU for this reason.

Similarly, I know that the software changed for the M3/M4 at some point in the last year, so that Sport Plus on the throttle no longer deactivates DSC. so if you fancy a bit more noise, Sport plus will give you a bit more with all the aids still turned on

Hi there, unfortunately, sport plus does not help. I drive it in this mode for the engine set up, at all times.

Blame the EU.

It must be frustrating to have to run a car in twice a year...

You can configure the M buttons to the set up you want including DSC on / MDM / DSC off?

Indeed you can, no need to have the DSC off everything can be changed independently of each other dampers/steering/traction/throttle/gear box.

M1 and M2 are just preset buttons and it's your choice what they do.

I thought I’d get someone who would respond like that.... My understanding was the forums were for these discussions. The whole concept of the website is about advice and experiences.

As mentioned, having had three of them, I am fully aware of the controls and their functions. It’s a shame manufacturers have to change for the worse.

In fairness the way you worded the OP sounded like you were saying the M2 button always turns traction control off.

Yeah a bit of an odd reply as the OP stated to get more noise he has to press M2 which turns the traction control off, which isn't the case so I thought he'd like the advice....

Not what was meant, but can see how it sounded. Bottom line is, the noise is less. That was the point.

It’s probably the new gasoline particulate filter that’s reducing the noise, probably a bit of HP also..

Get yourself a valve controller. Makes a hell of a difference. I have the CG Precission (2 remote fobs, 10 mins to fit) and even running in efficient with the valves constantly open it is a joy.

And I am think I am right in saying that due to the size and placement of the Petrol Particulate Filters you can no longer have a Carbon Propshaft either.

Still a great car even if a bit less loud.

I've a Remus centre back and sounds good with these installed on my August 2018 car. Having had it rolling roaded though it's clear it's holding back the bhp but torque is up (with a remap)

A few companies working on the workaround. Keep an eye on Motech as they'll be doing mine as as soon as it's ready (assuming you'd be happy to upgrade your exhaust!)
