£10k classic - suggestions?
Discussion
Morning chums!
I am looking for an interesting classic and am looking for suggestions - budget £10-12k, some sort of small-ish or sports coupe maybe.
Preferably something that will maintain its value or appreciate over the course of a year or 2.
What sort of things flick my bean?
- Italian classic (Lancia, Alfa etc)
- British classic (lotus etc)
What is definitely not on my list:
- American boats
- Jap stuff
- Barges/sleepers
- Porsche
GO!

That is all.
What about a Lotus Elan M100 ?
They're not a quite a classic in the true sense, but are modern, so drive well
They're not small tho'
Some parts eg chassis are still available
The ones on carandclassic seem on the high side IMO
eg for £16K but sold on ebay for £10K
Auction may be better eg but take another pair of eyes with you !

Lancia Fulvia is an absolute gem of a little car.
On a decent A road or B road the smiles per gallon factor is right up there.
Reaction from other people is wonderful - (nearly) everyone has a (positive) Lancia story.
Even the hacks sing its praises: Clarkson's "rorty sorbet", Coucher's "the thinking man's Mini-Cooper S" and "if Ferrari is the motorised equivalent of Dolce & Gabbana, Alfa Armani then Lancia is Loro Piana."
As with any 50 year old car, look in every crevice to satisfy yourself that it's solid before you buy. If you can wield a mean spanner yourself then the upkeep and fettling is a joy.
However, it seems they can take some effort to sell on. If you're after an 'investment' that you may need to turn to cash fast then it might not be the best bet. You need to find someone who's out to buy a Fulvia rather than a general "I want a classic car" (notwithstanding the title of your post!) If you're after a long term ownership that you'll enjoy, it won't disappoint.
You might have guessed, we have one. It's part of a stable with other Italian, British and German class and classics. And it's certainly the keeper of the lot and the one I get told most "if you want to sell it, I'll buy it."

TVR S Series. Brilliant fun, cheap to run, sound lovely, rare and can be gotten for far less than your budget. This one is probably the most expensive V6 car I've seen in a while. Loved mine to bits. You could even look at a V8 S which is a completely different animal.

3.6 XJS. Looks lovely, not ruinous like a V12, and this one looks great for the price. Loved my old 3.6, hated my 4.0.

Finally a Chimaera, and this is a pretty rare 4.5 litre, arguably the best engine option. Fantastic cars. This one looks great.

Another smallish Italian, the often overlooked Fiat 124 Sport Coupe...

Nice though.
I posted a couple of nice options here just a few hours ago:

Left field and perhaps not classic enough - Marcos https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1014436 A few years ago you'd have been able to pick up a much earlier one, those days have gone for quite a few of the more off the beaten track classics unfortunately.
I went looking for a Matra to post, but there doesn't seem to be one available in the UK.
This looks a bit like one though;

One obvious 'bad point' however.......
Thanks all - Plenty to think about there, A few that I'll tick off:
- M100 - not a good looking car, FWD, bad build quality, never liked them, and starting to fetch silly money for god-knows-what reason.
- TVR S - Had one, didnt really do it for me
- Chimaera (good chouce but..) - Had 2, not in the mood for one at the moment - I run the facebook page.
- XJS - Had one, prices have gone mental, paid £2k for one a few years back - bit of a barge really.
- 916 GTV - I certainly wouldnt be spending that much on one of those!!!!! Bit too new as well.
I do like the idea of a Fulvia, the interior on that Beta is.. special!!!
