How does the fuel tank work ?
Discussion
Well I'm trying to work out how much petrol needs to be left in the tank before I stop going.
One of the amusing characteristics of having a digital readout that changes every couple of seconds is that you can see the variation quite clearly on the fuel readout, for example under acceleration and cornering.
So last night I was down to my last few drops, and the reading was varying between 8 litres and 2 litres, and reading about 6 when stationary on the flat.
So does this mean I had only effectively 2 litres I could use ? Or is the fuel tank pressurised in some way that means I could use all 6 ?
Cheers,
Andy.

It means that the fuel was sloshing around in the tank and the point where the reading is taken was varying from the height when stationary with 2 litres in to the height when stationary with 8 litres in!
To answer your question, it depends! If you are going downhill (I think that the fuel pick up is at the front of the tank) then you can use up even more of the fuel than if you are going uphill. Of course cornering forces would come in to it as well.
BUT dont do it - all the crap at the bottom of the fuel tank will get sucked up and could block the fuel filter or injectors, much better to fill up when it show nearly empty - say 10 litres - this also gives you the advantage of hanving some fuel to go hunting for the petrol flavour of your choice rather than using the closest crap or expensive station

Thanks. I think I heard that petrol tanks have baffles to reduce the sloshing and also a trap and the bottom for all the crap. Either way I think I'll fill when the level first gets below 10.
Andy, we're your palms getting sweaty !? Or did you have company, and it was part of the plan
