Colleague of mine took delivery of a new Audi A3, 1.0 TFSI (manual) only three weeks ago and after 2000 miles the clutch has failed.

Audi recovered the car, removed the clutch and gearbox but are now claiming failure due to 'driver style', blaming 'prolonged heat as a result of riding the clutch or aggressive driving' and will not cover the new clutch and flywheel under warranty.

He is not an aggressive or harsh driver, and his previous car, also a manual Audi A3 (but 1.6 diesel) covered 110K miles without any issues, clutch or otherwise.

The majority of those 2000 miles would have been at motorway speeds, rather than stop/start motoring.

I can't see how he could have cooked the clutch in such a short time.

He has requested an independent assessor take a look on his behalf.

Anyone have any thoughts on likely causes, manufacturing or otherwise for such a failure ?

After trying to persuade my grandfather to buy an auto when he replaced his last car, he managed to get through a clutch on a 1.4 Skoda fabia in less than 6000 miles. Granted this was over about 5 years and not helped by a decline in hearing but anything is possible! 2000 miles does seem a little premature assuming your mate isn't partaking in repeated launch control takes offs, which, in a 1.0tfsi could become a little boring after the first few goes.

Sounds like a mechanical failure and audi trying to wriggle out of it. Wait to see what independent inspection comes back with. Even if they can prove it's misuse, 2k miles is outrageous, id be at least wanting a decent contribution.

Clutches don't just burn out.

Anyhoo, he should be talking to Audi HQ, not an independent assessor.

We've had an 18 year old ruin the clutch in an RS4 in an hour.

I'm guessing if they've pulled it and the flywheel is blue/scorched/cracked they'd come to that conclusion but that would be pretty impressive given the modest mileage and low power output.

There's something awfully familiar about this. I'm sure I read about a VAG diesel eating a clutch in a similarly short period of time, with similar blame put on the driver, but it was actually a defective clutch or flywheel? Surface was "dished" and so the lack of contact area led to slippage?

Anyone remember? I think it was a PH thread.
