Driver CPC Card
Discussion
The days of just getting any old driving job (van or 7.5T) seem to be long gone as I have found to my cost this year.
I have a meeting with my jobcentre advisor this afternoon made on my request as I picked up a leaflet last time I signed on about free CPC training to peole claiming JSA or UC and the leaflet stated you need to first speak to the jobcentre hence the appointment. dont know why that is - do you need to be referred by the JC?
Has anybody got any useful experience of getting a CPC or the training modules etc ? I am looking for the bare minimum to begin with just to get me a job as most vacancies seem to require a CPC card even van driving (apart it seems from the £7.83hr part time vacancies). I dont know whether the minimum training for the basic card is 35 hours or what.......
Are these training providers of "free" courses any good, genuine or just a means of squeezing grants off the government to try and keep unemployed layabouts like me busy learning nothing (why they rake in the money at my expense LOL)?

You need to complete 35 hours over 5 days to obtain a CPC card. If you can get it for nothing, you might as well. The courses my previous employer paid for were poor. There's no exam or test on what you've learned, and it's possible to sit through the same units 5 days in a row. It's a farce, and a shame that an opportunity to deliver meaningful training has been missed. I got my initial card in 2014, and I've completed 3 days towards renewal in 2019. I doubt I'll bother with the other 2 days, so won't be behind the wheel ever again after April next year.
found a great website explaining a bit more and there are 2 types of CPC.
Initial if you got your car licence pos 1997 and Periodic if you got it before 1997
.
so for me as I passed my car driving test before 1997 i would need the Periodic like you say mate its 35 hours classroom no exams.
Waiting to hear about cost if the DWP will not fund it. If its £150-200 it might be worth me shelling out for it myself as it means I can apply for lots more driving jobs.

Just had a response on cost for this one place I found but it does look very professional. £340 for Periodic CPC for the 35hrs.
If I am going to have to sit in a classroom for a week the training might as well be top notch. they deal with the jobcentres too so maybe my local JC+ can agree for me to go on this course rather than the one local that I picked the leaflet up for which doesnt look half as decent. .

Don't forget you may need to pay for a driver card as well https://www.gov.uk/tachographs/tachographs-in-ligh... so that's another £32.I've got a 3 year old unused driver card and never bothered with the driver cpc despite having a valid C+E licence I never use after thinking about it so that was £100 wasted.
Time to let them expire again I think

Honestly, driver CPC training is very unlikely show any correlation between price and quality. It's a means to an end. We viewed ours in a similar way to a speed awareness course - something to be endured. If I am going to have to sit in a classroom for a week the training might as well be top notch. they deal with the jobcentres too so maybe my local JC+ can agree for me to go on this course rather than the one local that I picked the leaflet up for which doesnt look half as decent. .

to be honest if its not that great its something new gets my brain working again and is something to memtion if i get any interviews in the future when people ask what have you been doing.......looks good on the CV to show DQC in terms of insurance work as they wont know how involved or not the actual trainig was but at least shows willing.i'll take from it whatever I can tbh.
