On demand secure ticket printing
Discussion
Doing some research for a business solution which may be required next year.
I want a secure (i.e. hard to replicate/defraud) paper permit solution. People will apply for a number of single use permits, and the permits issued to them will have to feature their name and the registration number of their vehicle.
Most secure ticketing printers are set up to do one big run, e.g. a ticket run for a single, specific event. My requirements will arise on a daily basis (some days, I daresay, none at all!)
So far, I've found books of printed tickets with a hologram - much like the old tax discs - upon which my staff could, I guess, hand-write the customer-specific information.
I do want to keep costs down, but am interested in
- automation at our location, i.e. a printer which personalises secure ticket stock, or
- out-sourced, where we send the details to a third party each day, and they print the required number of permits, and then post them out to the customer too.
At this stage, I'm really just interested in what's out there, as either Google isn't being very helpful or there's a gap in the market, very possibly because it's so small scale and fiddly, that it isn't profitable.
Anyone see any products/services which might meet this need?

QR code?
I assume someone is checking that these are legit?
How are they doing that, how would that person know the ticket was legit? Do they get to handle them or is it a produce on demand or display thing?
How do you enforce it, what's the penalty if they do forge/fake one?
Can you take us back a step, what problem are you trying to solve. I often get customer who want to buy a widget or modify one to deliver X but when we take it back to fundamentals there are other solutions they they couldn't see as they were so focused on widgets.

Thanks guys.
The facility people will be entering is open to the public. And most people can come and go as many times as they please, and don't require a permit.
However, some people do require a permit - due to their vehicle type, the number of times they can enter is limited. They will be required to hand over a permit on each occasion they visit.
We do have ANPR cameras - but no mechanical barrier - so I think it would encourage people to try their luck with a 'oh I'm sure I had one more permit in my allowance this year' attitude.
Requiring them to have and hand over something tangible will, hopefully, crystallise their intentions before they even leave home.

Why not give them an app that can be "charged" with as many permits as they are allowed (by your staff), and automatically decremented every time they visit the facility. The guys on the entrance can check that the app displays the correct name and registration number (as defined by your staff).
I'm guessing this is a recycling centre or similar, and you need to restrict the number of times white van man can dump waste.

A tech solution would be ideal, but too many people don't have smartphones, especially oldies.I'm guessing this is a recycling centre or similar, and you need to restrict the number of times white van man can dump waste.

I'm not going to entirely discount it from my considerations though - thanks

SMS them permits with unique numbers and identification in?You could use secure code generator devices (like some banking apps) if necessary so the guys on the gate can confirm the number in the SMS is legit (you as the issuing authority also have a code generator or generation capability).

It's cold, wet, dirty and staff are wearing heavy gloves. Faffing about with tech and spreadsheets is not an operational solution and just creates opportunity for argument, with customers insisting they still have outstanding permits.
Handing over a ticket which the operative glances at to check the reg number on it matches the vehicle and then stuffs in their coat pocket until the end of the shift would be far preferable.

Surely if you want to print tickets/tokens you just need to place a bulk order for either watermarked paper then run the paper through a normal inkjet or laser to print your custom ticket or just use preprinted secure ticket stock with your custom design. The later can be over printed by a thermal printer.
Some thermal ticket printers will come with apps that let the operators only enter certain data to enforce the ticket style and can save back to a database (or be driven from one).
E.g. http://www.beechman.co.uk/direct_thermal_tickets.h...
Other sources are available.
we have a bunch of zebra printers for shipping tag printing at work that print onto preprinted thermal foiled tags.
