If you're not sure, go at 30mph

Husband leaps to speeding wife's defence
May 12 2005
A DISGRUNTLED motorist has lodged a formal complaint on behalf of his wife who was 'zapped' as she travelled past the Whitehouse Industrial Estate in Runcorn.
Rob Casey, of Kelsall, was incensed to dis-cover his wife had been caught speeding at 41mph in a 30mph zone by a police camera van parked at Northwich Road.
Mr Casey argued that the location doesn't make sense - and that cameras should only be put in place in vulnerable areas such as built up housing estates and outside schools.
He also complained that the 30mph signs are difficult for drivers to see and are on the build up to a 40mph stretch at Dutton.
Now, Cheshire Safety Camera Partnership (CSCP) has pledged to review the matter after receiving a handful of complaints.
Said Mr Casey: 'This is absolutely unbelievable and I'll be taking the matter up with my MP.
'I'm complaining on behalf of my wife out of principle as there doesn't seem to be any justification for a 30mph limit at the White-house Industrial Estate.
'There are more dangerous places where they need to be. It also needs to be better signposted.'
Although the 30mph signs have been in place since 2001 and comply with standards set by the Highways Agency, a spokesman from CSCP admits the road could cause confusion.
Project manager Lee Murphy said: 'The signs are visible but because motorists are passing out of a 40mph zone it can be difficult to adjust.
'The signs are necessary at Northwich Road as there have been four collisions there in the past three years, two of them serious.
'We've had a few calls about this particular site but we've done our best to publicise it through the local press.
'We are trying to put the van out as much as possible to make people aware that it is a 30mph zone.
'If in doubt about the limit, drivers should always travel at 30mph.'

Translated in to real language,
we've been told drivers don't know about the change from 40mph to 30mph so we're going to get out their and have their pants down.

This is the saddest quote I have ever read.
Why?
Because there are so many numpties who, despite excellent signage, never know what the speed limit is. They are just completely unaware of it - as a part of their driving they have been ignoring it so long by now they do not even look for the signs or think about it.
Understandably they just look at the road and travel at the speed they deem safe. Not so bad, you may say, but leaving themselves open to inadvertantly speeding, getting caught and paying £60.
I despair - I really do - both at the numpties AND at the Scamera operators who appear to want to do nothing to help the numpties comply rather than get caught, and pay £60 etc etc.
Then the numpties will start following the above advice. And I'll get stuck behind 'em whilst trying to make some fnurking progress in a 50!
Lowest Common Denominator.
We *need* better driver training - else we'll all be doing 30mph everywhere.

Even if the limit is 20???!
30mph is no longer a ‘safe speed’.

Thats just ridiculous we might as well get out and walk. I can quite easily cycle constantly at 20mph and above... how are they going to fine me on my bike eh?
Can you get arrested for cycling over the speed limit? hehe
