Has anyone had both of these bad boys?

I'm after a 330d to get away from the 4 pot rattle of my 5er, but came across this Merc, I have never had a Merc or a 2.2 4 pot either?

thoughts?

I would get the 330d purely because of the engine.

Beware of the BMW wheels though. They are the famous MV3 wheels that crack easily. Make sure you take a good look at them and check for any dodgy welding repairs.

I had the Merc engine in my leased Q50. It wasn't the most refined, as you'll see in many reviews.

I'd go for the BMW because the six cylinder is a much better option, the Mercedes makes good power but won't feel as refined as the BMW, which is why I'd go for one of these C350cdi:

C350 CDI is a gear car, I ran one for nearly 3 years. Quick, powerful, great on motorway and was solid for me with no real problems

Merc is the larger, more space efficient car inside.
Merc interior is arguably nicer.
Merc more insulated from road noise.
Engine will be harsh and sound strained at revs.
Merc will be more economical.
Merc will be more expensive to service - even more so if kept with dealer servicing.

BMW engine is a peach
Quicker (a lot)
Much better noise
Smooth
BMW will handle better but may be harder suspension

My brother had 2 C Class before his current 330. His quote "why didn't I get one of these 6 years ago? Best car I've had"

On paper, Merc. If you have a pulse, BMW.

If you don’t like the 4 pot rattle of your BMW then you will really not like the MB 4 pot engine.
The 6 cylinder is very good though (as has already been said) as is the 6 cylinder BMW engine.

330d it is then, thanks gents.

I'll spend 90% commuting once a week along the coast road from Plymouth to Portsmouth and 10% doing the M5 trip to brim and in summer a road trip to Italy and back. So something "Interesting" under the bonnet is needed.

The six pot in the 2018 Mercedes GLE350 I had as a courtesy car sounded pretty poor, quite loud and clattery. Six cylinder 330d was quiet about refined with a nice subtle roar when floored.
