13 year old Seamaster or new Steinhart Ocean 1????

Hi folks, I’m unsure what to do on this one. My brother in law has found a rather nice 2005 vintage Omega Seamaster local to us for sale. He’s unsure about it, but my sister has asked if I could have a look at it for her with a view to buying it for his Christmas as a surprise.
I have a few nice watches, but personally like to buy new, so as an alternative I suggested a Steinhart Ocean 1 rather than the Omega, which I also own. I know it’s not an Omega or likely to be as valuable an asset, but feel reluctant to pay the £1350 for the Omega being 13 years old. Am I being silly? I feel mildly hypocritical as I also have a Seamaster that I bought new in 2003 and managed to get it for £745, so would love to think it’s worth £1350 too!

Is he unsure if he likes it, or whether he thinks it's worth the asking price?
You mention that you normally like to buy things new. Fair enough. Does that apply to your BiL, though?
Has he mentioned in the past that he likes/would fancy a Steinhart?
I've wittered on in the past about Steinharts, which I really like, particularly their Ocean One Titanium which is (to my eyes) the Submariner design reimagined and updated for the 21st century....

Easy one, as much as i think the Steinhart are a nice looking watch, and good specs, its no Omega Seamaster sorry.
Unless your talking about a non Auto - Quartz Omega? and looking at an Auto Steinhart, in which case yes buy the Steinhart.
That said if the BIL is fancying an Omega, i dont think the Steinhart will cut it either way.

Yes, equally loves my Ocean One Blue ceramic.

It’s a Quartz Seamaster. That said I have a Quartz and due to my work at the time it was never a daily and did become a pain resetting it most weekends!! Andy
Although I also do have a few autos on a winder and they’re still needing set from time to time!

Personally some good used Breitlings in that ball park (Colt Auto's).....if you like them of course.
If its something new thats going to hit the spot, i think you cant go far wrong with a Christopher ward, Swiss Auto movements, 5 year warranty, i own a CW Trident C600 Diver, and its a fantastic watch for the money (£730) they have much higher priced models with in house certified movements as well.
Other new options are: ORIS, Alpine, Glycine, Hamilton, Longines, Ball, TAG, all well established brands.

I can see why you're having doubts about it. For me, the fact that he likes your Ocean One would perhaps swing it the way of the Steinhart. They hold their value, too. Have you seen their bronze range? Pretty funky things on the leather or the green strap.

The Steinhart is the better watch, in fact I would say they are on a par with the auto Seamasters as it's basically the same movement. Of course they don't have the same cachet, but you are absolutely paying for the brand.
I personally wouldn't entertain 4 figures plus for a steel quartz watch.

I completely disagree . I've got an Ocean 500 (very similar to the Ocean 1), and a Seamaster Chrono, and the Seamaster is far and away the better watch. Overall the finish is nicer, the wave dial versus the plain black, the bracelet, the clasp etc etc.Lastly, the Steinhart accuracy is appalling, it gains about 20s a day. It's out of warranty, despite going back to Steinhart twice and eventually swapping the original movement for an ETA 2824. No such problems with the Omega, nor with a Tudor with a 2824 movement either.
