Considering a complete change of career and would like to understand more about the role, salary, pros and cons of being a train driver.

I work very close to Swindon station and have seen the new hitachi trains.

So what is the salary and working conditions of a train driver? How would one apply?

the pay these days is very good circa £45-50k nothing like the BR days.

the job is cleaner too.

i think there is a waiting list of people wanting to be drivers but could depend on the company not sure about GWR. you will need to undergo a physical as well as eyesight tests.

i suppose we dont have the shifts that we used to have when the railway was a true 24 hour operation unless you are rostered onto overnight possession and maintenance workings.

All the info you need is on that site.

Be warned, the selection process is long and quite tough. The competition is fierce and you’ll start on the training rate which can be considerably below what a fully fledged driver gets and the training can last up to 18 months.
