Hi all

Looking for a bit of advice as to what has happened to my BMW X1 Drive.

I purchased this 15 months ago at approved dealership and it had a 1 year approved warranty.
After a year i put car in for MOT and informed garage that gearbox was crunching , car passed MOT no problem and garage said nothing wrong with gearbox , however i returned car a few days later and insisted a mechanic comes in car and hears gearbox which he did and he only needed to go from 1st gear to 2nd gear (50 yards) and he agreed new gearbox needed, i was not happy it took me to insist mechanic sat in car after me telling them it had a problem.

Anyways new gearbox fitted along with new clutch all done under warranty.

Now after 3 months the differential has exploded and ruined whole engine and BMW garage are saying it's out of warranty etc , my point is do you feel this is acceptable as unclear if garage should have checked diff etc when new gearbox and clutch were fitted.

Car has only done 61k miles full service BMW history , garage are not willing to take any responsibility as to damage done and new engine is 12k as well as new diffs drive shafts etc are extra.

I am only asking you guys as i'm not sure what to do and if garage are correct so be it but hopefully someone can clarify my position as to what to do.
Thanks in advance.

It’s not something that would check as part of doing the gearbox- but the would have disconnected the front prop shaft from the transfer box to do the job. I’d be taking pictures of the damage and getting a second opinion on the cause of the failure- if it was the diff itself then it’s just bad luck I guess - but if it was the prop knuckle failed and was the cause of it smashing everything around it then it’s worth asking why it failed- May have been not refitted properly or, like e70 x5’s were doing - just failing prematurely.

I’d be asking the dealer to put in a goodwill claim to bmw too - only 3 months out of warranty, I would like to think they may make a contribution to the repair

How has a faulty diff damaged the engine?

+1 on the goodwill claim. That's just disgraceful, but sadly what I've come to expect from BMW dealers and the product. How has the diff failed? How many miles has the car done? They're not the best thing in the world for reliability but X1 front diffs should do 80k or so. How many miles since the gearbox change?
The front diffs usually make a noise before they explode, and it's normally only the sump that needs replacing unless it was driven with a major oil leak.......?

Hi and thanks for your replies.

Car has done 61k which is just over 6k since new gearbox and clutch.

Dealer had approached BMW and BMW were willing to pay 60% of labour costs but now that it needs a new engine they are quoting 12k that I will need to contribute as well as £1800 in costs up to now.
I’m sure they said differential exploded and it knackered engine now as well as drive shafts at front as it smashed sump. After new gearbox was fitted there was a whirling noise from car but we just thought it was normal for new gearbox and clutch.
Thanks again for all your replies.

Which diff has gone? (I'm guessing front?)

This sounds like it has the potential to be a reaction to whatever happened when the engine was removed.

Yes just watched video from garage and definitely front diff which has gone as it has large hole at side of engine.
It is a 14 plate x1 drive BMW.

The garage returned with an offer of £7500 if no new engine fitted (BMW offered this as far as we know) minis the £1600 which includes the garages contribution of £255 for work done up to now towards new or used BMW, we did not accept this.

Update as they have now came back and said pay the £1600 and they might be able to add this to new or used BMW , so potentially £7500 towards another car.

Thanks again for your replies and I will keep you all informed.

Perhaps a solicitor could assist?

Where is the hole in the engine? In the sump (the normal place) or the actual block? The noise was the diff, but for it to start after the box was replaced suggests the prop wasn't fitted correctly.

If the car has FBMWSH then you need a massive goodwill contribution from BMW.

Twitter is a good place to air this as well.

Can you post the video?

Christ.

Where are you based? If BMW are going to be aholes about it, you're better off getting the car to a good specialist - I know a few.

Hold on, is 2014 the older model?

What engine is it?

2 litre diesel?

Loads of people will fit reconditioned 2 litre diesel engines from around £2500.
Just search eBay.

I would get the car out of BMW.

Are they offering to buy the car back for £7600?
If so do it and buy another one, they are out there for hardly any more than that now.

I agree with this. Get out into something newer , rather than risk other problems in the future.
Used prices of the new X1 (I have one) are dropping so surely plenty of old ones around.

Hi
Yes 2.0 litre engine and they are not offering to purchase for 7.5k they said trade in value only. Cheapest is £15 at least at garage.

We are expecting them to clarify a couple of things today and we will be able to update you all.

Either way we won’t be getting the engine fixed as too many things gone wrong with it up to now.

We are based in Midlothian and hopefully we will get some answers later today.

Thanks again for all your replies.

You need to give us a bit more detail mate so we can help you.

What year is the car? I thought I read 2014?

What model is the car?

RWD or AWD?

You don't fix it, there are loads of people out there that will put in a reconditioned N47 engine for around £2500+vat.

You would be mental to spend £12,000 on a new engine.

If you look on autotrader 14 plate X1s are starting from around £7500 now with 70k miles on them. They have all the bits you need fitted to it.

Don't make any rash decisions, hear what BMW have to offer and then do some homework. There are options for you that could save you thousands.

If your car is genuinely worth £15k, then spend £3k getting it sorted and sell it, that will probably be your least painful option.

AWD. The front diffs on these are too weak, prone to exploding and puts a hole in the sump.

We are meeting with Garage next week and it definitely seems that things are happening for the good but until we meet next week nothing is confirmed.

I shall let you all know how it goes next week and many thanks for all your help so far

Hi all just a final update.

We had a meeting at the garage and BMW themselves have offered £7500 towards another car , the garage have eventually offered just over £1000 in total but we still have to pay £800 towards their labour costs and they are putting engine back into car and we also can take car back and repair or sell as we please.

All in all quite happy with this as we should get 5-6k for car as it has new clutch , gearbox , diffs etc and someone can repair engine.

Thanks again to everyone for there help and advice.
