Buying a 6 month old car - Road tax

Hi,

I've just bought a 6 month old car with 3000 miles on the clock and the dealer has just sent the invoice to pay and it includes £77 for 6 months road tax.

Surely the car is already taxed when it was new so should i have to pay for the tax again?

Road tax or whatever it's real name is ,is not passed on when buying a used car ,hasn't been for a few years now.

As far as I know, Road Tax is no longer transferable.... it helps the gubbermint make more money.

You have to pay for your Road Tax - it is associated with the owner rather than the vehicle AFAIK

Not only do you need to pay it, but you’ll actually need to pay for a full year at £140. As the existing tax is cancelled when car is transferred between owners now.

You can pay monthly as said or you can buy 6 or 12 months VED.

The choice is yours.

RFL is £140 per year, so if you want a year, you will have to pay £140. Tax stops when a car changes hands and you need to start again.

It’s been this way for nearly 5 years.

Not only that OP, if you buy the car in the middle of the month or even 1 day before the end of the month you have to tax it from the start of that month.

No, not when the road tax was transferred with the car

When I bought my car earlier in the year the dealer told me how he'd kindly paid the tax for the year on it.

Funny that as my car is £0 for the year!

In that circumstance you’re correct, but when buying cars from dealers it was rare that RFL came with the cars so my point stands

But the last car I bought came with 6 months paid for by the dealer.

Although I suppose I did pay for it in reality.
