Took out my induction pipe and filter for some maintenance, but noticed 6 spacer washers between the body work and the short piece that the air filter and induction hose connect to.

Are they all necessary, or is it just because the bolt used to secure it is ridiculously long?

Just fit it however it fits best, one washer or six. It’s a TVR, anything goes!

I think you will find the filter will be crushed against the bodywork without the pipe being 'spaced' out.
If I were doing it I would find or make a spacer the right length instead of stacking up washers.

Update:

One of the bonnet pins I replaced recently on the Cerbera has come in handy! I'm not sure why I didn't throw it away but I hardly ever do chuck stuff away unless it has totally had it, you never know when it'll have a use. Anyway, it happens to have an M8 internal diameter:

It was internally threaded so I cut 20mm off the end and ran an 8mm drill bit down it. Works well as a nylon spacer. smile

Fitting it all again was tricky but was OK once I'd removed the number plate for access. The filter now sits a bit lower than before too. cool

That is the sort of item we have in our 'Plastic Bits & Bobs' drawer.

I never throw something like that away.

Stripped down a duff switch today and sure enough the contacts were all burnt out so it went in the bin. But, the 2 springs that were inside it went in the 'Springs' drawer.

And what will happen to our stashes of treasures when we're gone? They mean nothing to those outside outside our realm.
My wife tells me that she will have three skips arrive the morning after my funeral irked. And that's just for the home workshop and sheds... she knows nothing of my main workplace! biglaugh

I was missing the pipe but sourced one from Central with the long bolt. My filter was a tight fit and I think this as why I don't have the original as it might have been damaged removing the filter and chucked by the PO.

Anyway Central say as my Chim is a MK1 1995, and originally the filter would have been low mounted and recommended fitting it higher as later cars.

Where is yours mounted and do you have a photo showing where the hole in the body is located?

Lance

Waited for the drizzle to stop, here's photos of mine as requested (it's a late '96 facelift model):

It's just an 8mm hole through the body down near the bonnet hinge. It may look prettier with a dome headed bolt, but at least I treated it to a new washer. smile

It was easier to remove the filter connector pipe when I had the radiator out. But I put stuff back in a different order so removing the front number plate made it easier.

Excellent.

I think there is a hole in the same place on mine, I'll check.

So the earlier fixing being two bolt and mounted near the bottom of the radiator would be a better more rigid idea apart from being not so protected from the elements, that is.
