Out for a pre Christmas lunch blast on empty roads this morning and car got a good workout. When I got back I gave it a once over before putting it back in the garage, but when I was drying the rear window, I noticed the rubber grommet that holds the wiper arm in place had a 1/8” gap between the glass and grommet itself.

Is this normal? I have never noticed it before and I think I would have questioned it as I am now worried that water running down windscreen will go through gap and into motor mechanism.

Is the grommet supposed to fit flush with glass or is there a gap normally? I can’t work out why there would be a gap.

Can anyone have a quick look at theirs if they’re not too drunk or full of festive food!

Hi. Yep, this is a thing. I'm always pushing mine back down as it seems to lift as a consequence of normal driving even if it hasn't been operated. Insofar as I'm aware it's a finisher more than an actual seal between the shaft and the window, otherwise water would get in all the time.
TBH I find the wiper a bit of a ball ache and wish it wasn't there. It never parks in the right position after use (usually because I've selected reverse when the front wipers are running) and because I wax the rear and side windows, they always clear quickly once there's sufficient air movement over the car anyway.
