Good morning PHers

I've recently bought a '09 997.2 Carrera S and I just wanted to ask if anybody can help me decode the VIN as to figure out if it has LSD or not

I know it's a rare option on 911s but the way the car behaves on roundabouts just makes me feel like there's an LSD at work

The car came without manuals (in my Boxster S there was a page with all the option codes on it) only the service bulletin, and I can't find an easy VIN decoder as I do for my bimmer

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Have you got the service book. Sticker in the front ?

Failing that speak to local OPC and they will print a build sheet off for you.

Not sure about 997s but the earlier 911s had an options sticker under the frunk lid

997’s don’t have one.

if you can get both rear wheels off the ground.
With the car in neutral turn the drivers side wheel by hand.
If the wheel on the nearside turns in the same direction of travel is has a LSD.
If it turns in the opposite direction of travel it does not

or, if you can't wheels of the ground - get one wheel on some wet grass or other slippery surface and the other on tarmac or similar.
With some decent revs go for a quick getaway, if you succeed through traction from wheel with grip then you likely have a working mechanical LSD, if you sit and spin the wheel on the grass then likely not a mechanical LSD at least, or if you do it's not working properly.

Pretty sure you only get a LSD on 997 C2S if you specify Sport PASM -20mm?

Really surprised more 997 owners didn't go for the LSD - its been optional equipment ever since the 3.2 Carrera/964 C2. Funnily enough most manual 964 C2 and 3.2 Carrera seemed to have it specified more often than not. Opposite way round from 996/997 onwards so it seems with factory LSD optioned cars being unicorns...

Indeed. Did ask OPC about retrofitting to me 997.2 GTS but was told it’s not possible. Not sure why....

OP I’d recommend fitting the Short Shift to your car. My GTS has the ORM “Sport Shift Kit” as it’s called. Plenty of aftermarket options though.
