Anyone able to confirm the start date of the first MOT of a car that was first registered on 10 January 2017?

I know it is 3yrs from date of first registration so does that mean that the current MOT is valid till end of 9 January 2020 or end of 10 January 2020?

I know it is only a day, but the vehicle is leased and that day will determine who's liability it is to MOT the vehicle - mine or the lease company's.

Vehicle lease agreement is until end of 9 January 2020 so, in theory, vehicle is the lease company's responsibility from 10 January 2020.

Internet searches seem to be coming up with conflicting information and can't find the answer on the GOV.UK website.

Type the reg into the MOT check website .ORG.

I'd assume that would give the date....9th or 10th.

It must be the 9th. On our work lease contracts we had to get the cars MOT'd before they went back - is it mentioned in your contract?

Tried that, but it doesn't have any info - see screenshot.

Unfortunately, not mentioned in my contract and when I spoke to the lease company, it was clear the girl who was on the phone wasn't sure herself so didn't push it any further.

So you think the current MOT is valid till the end of 9 January 2020?

Can you hand it back a day or two earlier?

That's an option I'm considering but was hoping to get a definitive answer to this question so I can decide whether to do this.

May pop into a local MOT test station and ask them.

TBH, I really thought this info would have been on the GOV website.

There is no current MOT it is not due until 3 years from the day of registration, you may however get an MOT 30 days before that runs from the 3yr anniversary.

I thoink you're over-thinking it. The GOV website says:

"You must get an MOT for your vehicle by either:

the third anniversary of its registration"

So if you leave it until the 10th you haven't had it done by the car's third anniversary.

The other thing is you want to get it in before the car's warranty expires.

lol. You are right about over-thinking it.

Don't understand the relationship between the warranty and the MOT. Can you elaborate?

It's unlikely, but it might fail on something covered by warranty.

The OP doesn’t want to do that though because they’re tight and don’t want to spend £50 they might not have to on an MOT

Would that be tight as in:

Browsing MSE forums
Looking for cheaper alternatives to branded kitchen appliances
Looking for deals on engine oil/car tyres

Guess I must be as tight as the guy who does that. wink

Jeez, how hard can it be? smile

Exempt
Year 1. 10/01/17 to 09/01/18 .
Year 2. 10/01/18 to 09/01/19.
Year 3. 10/01/19 to 09/01/20.

MOT required
Year 4. 10/01/20 to 09/01/21
etc.

If lease expires on 09/01/20 and you return the vehicle on, or before, that date it is still exempt.
I'm curious how the lease could require you to have a vehicle tested when the relevant legislation says it is not needed.

It’s an un-necessary faff if it’s not needed, especially if you’re in job where can’t just bob out for an hour or so. And there always the possibility that it’ll fail which is more hassle - I had a company car fail its pre-return MOT on a tyre that no-one, apart from the tester, could see anything wrong with.

not wanting to buy a lease company an MOT is tight?
I'm sure he'll be leaving them a basket of muffins on the passenger seat, and leaving a 10-15% tip when he settles the finance, that's normal right ?

Clear as day?

Check your contract though - I've seen agreements where 30 days MOT is required.

If you want to drive the car on the road on the 10th Jan you need to MOT it. If you won't be driving it on 10th onwards then park it up

The vehicle will require an MOT from midnight on 09/01/2020 but from previous experience with customers with lease cars the leasing company always required them to have the car MOTd a month early.

This. Same with servicing some of our fleet went back before the service indicators were at Zero. If they were <500 miles to go we had to get the service completed. As they were always full maintenance it was never a cost concern just an inconvenience.
