So my brother is looking to get a cheap car for around a grand. He only does around 15k miles a year, so something that is going to be cheap to maintain would need to be a priority. He doesn't want it to turn into a money pit, just something he can run for a year. Any suggestions.

Morning all,

You will easily get a (good) Focus or Fiesta for that sort of money. They are very cheap to maintain and quite nice to drive too. Having said this, my uncle also had an Avensis and didn't complain (to me anyway...) about any horror stories. A larger choice than you think for a grand!

Good luck!

I've done 11k miles in the last 7 months in my Audi A2 Tdi. It's averaged 70mpg, costs £30 RFL and has never let me down.

I'm looking for something similar. The sub £1K market seems to be tiny compared to what it was a few years ago. 10 year old shopping cars costing well over £2k seems nuts.

You're best off searching by price and distance, and buying on condition.

The best car for a grand is just what's about at the time and has been well looked after.

I've had lots of them and none have let me down. Get on eBay and gumtree stick in your price, distance willing to travel and find something in good condition.

Currently running a 07 focus cat d as it was the best about when I was looking, lots of history very good condition. Written off for a scratch on the bumper.

Any other suggestions, I have tried to stay away from anything French, just personal preference. I put the Mini in, but I have owned one, they are supeb cars but I did warn my brother they are expensive to fix.

Probably best looking for a well looked after private sale car, anything at that price point being sold by a "dealer" will likely have been picked up for around £100 at an auction..after it was traded in because the previous owner knew there was too much wrong with it to make it worth while fixing.

Toyota Avensis, I own one. Ive done 7k in it and it's been faultless, that is until the clutch started to slip yesterday, but that's wear and tear. Soon as that is replaced I expect the car will last as long as I want it to without many issues.

Only other issue is an oxygen sensor that is a bit dodgy every so often.
