I bought some items on Ebay that turned out to be faulty.

The seller has refunded the cost of the items, but not the return postage.

Paypal doesn't seem to allow me to open a case because the original purchase price has been returned. The seller has blocked me on Ebay so I cannot contact him.

I have read elsewhere on the Internet that Paypal won't refund in excess of the purchase price.

The sum in question is small. but I buy a lot off Ebay and want to know the score for the future.

Many thanks

No idea, but my advice after dealing with that rabble is to just let it go. Not worth the time trying to work it out!

Provided its not something massive, If you open a return through the eBay protocol rather than just corresponding directly with the seller, you should be emailed a prepaid postage returns label to attach to your parcel. You then take it to the post office who scan it in and give you a receipt.

He said he did that, but he didn't.

Contact them through chat or phone call and explain
BUT
If you didn't open a case and sent them back off your own expense it gets a bit he said/ she said

I opened a case but it has been automatically closed by the refund he issued.

Royal mail/courier doesn't refund the seller, so he/she can't refund the buyer.

QVC doesn't refund the buyer when they make a mistake. (Sent wrong CD).

It's the law, as far as I am aware, for the seller to pay for the return of faulty items.

Don’t know if this is the add or not but do know that I ordered some cheap T-shirt’s for gym/holiday from sports direct and some had to go back for fault and incorrect item shipped and I had to pay for return postage on them - which was nearly as much as I paid for the initial items! Be interested to know if that is the case!

If the seller doesn't issue a return postage label I just wait until I can escalate to eBay who will then either issue the label and refund or simply refund.

It looks like this has happened.
Buyer buys item which is faulty
Buyer opens communication with seller but doesn't open case
Buyer sends items back paying return carriage himself
Buyer is refunded original costs
Buyer then opens case but e bay close it as seller has refunded and its probably a cancellation type refund

Buyer has few options
1. Suck it up and learn from it
2. Ask the seller fore goodwill purposes to refund his return postage costs
3. Try to get e bay to either refund him his return postage costs or put pressure on buyer

Of these options
1 Is rather obvious
2. May get somewhere but
3. Little chance

I am perhaps not as familiar with Ebay;s workings as I should be. But when they didn't work I clicked on "I want to return this item" and "because it's faulty". I then got a immediate email from Ebay saying that my return had been accepted.

Does that not open a case?

I sent an email via Ebay's system asking how he wanted the items returned and he said, "using the label in My Ebay". but there was not one there and he didn't reply to further emails. So I paid for Royal Mail and returned it myself.

That's interesting. I am not sure it will help now that I have paid already. But interesting nonetheless. It makes me wary as an occasional seller though. I would not want someone sending me back stuff that I have sold, just because they've changed their mind.

I was being blunt - it may have appeared arrogant or dismissive that wasn't the intention if it was taken that way I apologise.
I would personally contact e bay and explain that you couldn't see/ didn't know the seller had sent a label. Explain that you paid the return postage yourself and that you feel miffed. It is just possible e bay may refund you

TBH I am as much interested in not getting lumped with return postage in the future as I am with this case. If I am understanding things correctly, obtaining a return label and not doing anything until a postage paid one is provided is the key to success?

On this occasion £3.95. In the future, a lot more potentially.

Clearly I don't intend to expend too much energy over £3.95, but I don't want to come unstuck with returning bigger / heavier items.

Return label isn't normally sent via email on eBay on the occasions I've had to do it, it's always one of the last steps on the returns process with the option to print it off.

Take it as a lesson learnt and if there's no return label option contact eBay before you post it back.
