Minecraft Question

I have Googled this but can't find an answer. My daughter has been playing minecraft for a few weeks now and has managed to obtain a Cartographers map. The map shows an area that she is not familiar with. There is a house structure shown on it which I assume is a mansion. There is a small white dot on the lower left corner of the map which I assume is her position relative to the map. However, no matter how much she moves about, the white dot doesn't move. My question is, how do you find the area covered by the map?

As a keen Minecraft player I can answer this! The map only shows a set area size so if you are not within those boundaries then you won't show moving about inside them but the position of your character (dot) on the edge of the map tells you which way you need to go. You've said the dot is in the lower left corner so your actual location is some way SW of the map area. Head NE and keep going in that direction (it could take you several thousand blocks) and eventually you'll see the map start filling in and your character will move inside the boundary. Once you see that then you're not far off the mansion.

Well she found it. It was some distance away as you said. A very large and impressive structure. Unfortunately it was well past her bed time by then so despite lots of pleading, she can explore it tomorrow

I would recommend making a safe room either inside or just outside the mansion and set your spawn point by placing and sleeping in a bed. There's a high chance of getting killed in the mansions, especially by the evokers. It's a long walk back if you don't set your spawn nearby! Some of the statues have a nice item in the middle of them and there are a couple of secret rooms/paths with a loot box in them to find as well.
