I’m not the smallest of guys (I met Phazed today, he’ll confirm that!) and therefore while the driving position is generally great, I wondered if there was any way to modify the boss or associated components to move the wheel backwards a little. I know the obvious answer is to lose weight, that’s the plan! But in the meantime it would be nice if anything could be done?

Thanks

No is the simple answer. You’d have to move the dash back to facilitate the cowling and stalks, or cut a chunk out of it.
You could cut a section out of the steering shaft and weld it back together which will clearly shorten it but you still have the problem of clashing with dash, sorry mate you’ll have to lose weight which is a good thing, the car will be faster hehe

Undo the 6 allen bolts, reverse the wheel so that the back is facing you and bolt it back on. I'm sure it will be less pretty and will be closer to the column stalks but it may give you a temporary solution

Things aren’t that bad to have to turn the wheel round, I was just curious if it was possible. No problem in the meantime, but yes, diet is on the cards!

In the meantime what about a flat bottom steering wheel ?

Not a bad idea, I was toying with the idea of a smaller steering wheel anyway. Has anyone fitted one? Like to see what it looks like

Did you have a ride/drive in Phazed's Chimaera?
Would a set of lower seats get you around the problem?
His are Elise seats, IIRC

The wheel mounts onto a 'crush structure' which you can see if you pop the horn push out. You will also see the retaining nut in there as well. It would be possible to dispense with the crush zone and fit a custom made spacer. This should (at a guess) move the wheel about 20mm.
Not ideal but could be done.

Something to bear in mind if the OP does that (I had thought about doing it), on mine, it would put my right hand fingers very close to the wiper stalk, and there would only be just enough clearance for the pull back for the washers. As you say, not ideal.

There's far more clearance on the left hand stalk for some reason. I have the standard plastic stalks - I think there might be more clearance with the leven ones. I can't remember as I replaced them a long time ago.
