Hello all

I've recently sold my chim, which was painful enough for me, but now to add insult to injury I've just tried to cancel my insurance or put it on hold until I can get my next TVR after the summer, fingers crossed.

I renewed in January this year for £600 odd (paid upfront classic car insurance - second year of policy) and they won't refund anything or even freeze my policy. This means I'm about £400 out of pocket, which is a pretty good deal for them, surprise surprise.

I understand that it says as much in their documentation, but can this really be right?

Thanks

Stef

Depends what you agreed to when you signed.
Does sound harsh, though.

I'd let them know that they won't be getting your business for your next car as a consequence - might focus them a bit.

I did insinuate this on the phone. 'Computer says no'. Maybe it's worth trying to speak to a manager?

If your car is insured on a classic car policy you will find this is pretty much standard across the board

I have used 3 differnt classic car insurances (1 last year and two differnt ones this year) and all the same.

You have to make that desicion when taking the policy out and weigh up the pro's and con's ....

ie cheaper over all for the year.... but if off loading the car is it cheaper ???????

"BLEEDIN INSURANCE" Amazing what you can get insured for these days...

Er - probably, I'm afraid it's usually a case of RTFM

hmm. thanks for the response. I guess I've been a bit dim, I just never assumed that this COULD be in the small print. (OK it's not actually that small). It's at least worth pointing out this potential issue to anyone as crap with this kind of stuff as I am.

This seems to be more common now. I have changed my insurance to "laid up" in the past, but my current and last policies don't allow this. I just renewed and went through a whole bunch of permutations before deciding which one to go for - basically weighing up if it was worth getting a more expensive policy that I could cancel later and get some refund on against a cheaper one with no refund possibility.

My current broker, Classic Line, pointed out that as my policy is limited mileage, it is less relevant if I lay up the car or cancel the policy before the end of the policy - the important factor on a limited mileage policy is the number of miles done. They did, however, mention that if I do less than the mileage limit this year, then they may be able to get a reduction on renewal for next year.

Just had a similar problem... sold the Chim bought a Tuscan - had 4 months left on Chim with Classicline, couldn't transfer because they wouldn't insure the higher value car in my area postcode - so had to cancel - ended up insuring the Tuscan with Nat-West of all people... good price too... and no refund on the Chim (but it did say on the policy, only I didn't clock it at the time I took it out...well you don't do you, do you???)

Oh and they withheld my no claims proof until I returned the certificate - that really irritated me considering the above!! Blackmail...but pointless..

This is the company I'm with / was with, maybe there may be some mileage in this route, so to speak. I mean I must have clocked up, oh, at least 1000 miles from the start of the cover...

To be fair to Classicline that is who I am insured with & they were able to swap over my insurance from Chimaera to Tuscan without any problems. I was also advised when I took out my original insurance to always take the minimum mileage cover (3k) for the car as the policy is none refundable & as you approach that mileage you can call & add further or unlimited mileage onto your policy at no extra cost to what the price would have been originally.
As I am fairly weather reliant on how much I use my car I find this very useful & if GOD forbid I was to have a problem with my car I am not paying for mileage I am not going to use.

Sorry for long post

Howard.

I'm also with Classicline, and seem to recall the no refund policy, although I think there is the ability to suspend it for a period. Surely no refund and no suspension clause, whilst the insurer has absolutely no risk, amounts to an unfair contract term, which is illegal.
