Best place to source 116500LN
Discussion
I appreciate this is a long shot but its worth a try... I am searching for a Rolex Daytona 116500LN and I know I am going to pay overs on retail which I can live with. However all the usual outlets are asking £18k+ which I am not prepared to pay, Do any of you PHers have any ideas on where is best to source?
Stop being a spoil sport and just pay well over list for one !
Seriously, your best chance is abroad but whatever scenario to get one at anything like sensible money you have to have good contacts as your effectively asking someone to lose money on what they could sell it for ;-)
Your best bet in this country (other than via a relative in the business) is via a dealer who is prepared to sell you an import off the books but even then you will have to pay overs.

Like I said I am more than happy to pay over list for one as I did the same with my sub. I just cannot justify twice list. I toyed with the idea of abroad but being honest I wouldn't know where to start. Hence me coming to PH for some advice(criticism) Seriously, your best chance is abroad but whatever scenario to get one at anything like sensible money you have to have good contacts as your effectively asking someone to lose money on what they could sell it for ;-)

That's what they are going for trade. Selling to the trade is nice and easy, selling to private people in the main isn't. I think you will have to pay what the market says I am afraid.
The only surefire way is to build up,a decent buying record with an AD but that takes time and money, sometimes you end up with watches you are not that keen to buy. Sadly it is the way it is now.

I understand the way of the world with AD's now and unfortunately I am new to watch buying so I do not have a relationship with any currently. I will keep looking. I am going to visit a couple of AD's and sound them out which I know is pretty much pointless given the wait lists. It is annoying, but this is what happens when people keep flipping them. Maybe get something from your local AD, and start the process, it's all about relationship building.
It's not really private buyers flipping them that's causing this situation though. The majority of 'flipping' is being carried out by authorised dealers who are selling to grey market dealers. Not that it's their fault either - they have to do this in order to off load undesirable stock with the 'hot' pieces, undesirable stock which they've been lumbered with because they get no say in the watches that Rolex send them and hey are forced to take in order to retain AD status. It's a vicious cycle caused by Rolex themselves, though it has made them the most successful watch company by far, so who can blame them.......
I honestly don’t understand why anyone is prepared to pay over retail for one...surely when it gets to this stage the answer is to forget about it and buy something else? Don’t get me wrong, hugely desirable, I get the pull of wanting a Daytona, etc. But once you’ve gone though all that, paid all that extra money and you’ve got it in your hand, on your wrist, or just in a box in a safe...is it worth it?
Or is there that much profit in it, that it’s worth doing and keeping the prices spiralling? (Doesn’t seem worth the effort if so).
Of course the other possibility is money-no-object-I-just-want-one...which I ‘get’ the most, but can relate to the least...

I’ve tried most of the dealers in the NW and all have refused to put my name down as the list is too long. I’ve also tried dealers abroad whilst away with work or on holiday - it’s a similar story there. Last place I tried was Geneva where I hoped to have more luck
Airport boutiques is a good shout but you will need to be in the right place at the right time as I doubt they stick around for long (prob minutes)
If the economy deteriorates then you might find watches which were trading well over RRP can be had for RRP. Time will tell

right'o, so prove me wrong by showing us all one for sale thats not double the retail price?
There is nothing to prove. You stated they don't go together but they do. He may find one cheaper, but regardless the two statements do go together. He'll pay over but not prepared to pay 18k+I'm very well aware of the Rolex situation just now and my advise would be to email Rolex and tell them to stick their Daytona up their arse, you're off to buy a Patek but that's just me.
