Hi. The ABS lights have come on and I have run a Fault code scanner and it’s telling me that the ABS pump has failed and I have a steering angle sensor failed. I have read that it may not be the pump but a speed sensor although I am not getting that fault code up. Can anyone advise please are there any checks I can do first. I am getting replacement part 6756216 which is the pump but don’t want to spend lots of money if other checks can be done first.

Thanks John

What is the car?

What is the fault code?

Are there any other symptoms?

If you are already getting a pump then we can't stop you spending lots of money as you already will have, it will also inevitably need coding to the car before it will be recognised by the car.

Hi it’s a X5 E53 3.0i. I meant the code reader is giving me replace part part number 6756216. I haven’t purchased the part yet

Also I don’t have any other symptoms. I have found a company that will test and if faulty will repair so it won’t need re programming. Just wondered if there could be other things causing the lights to come on even though the fault code reader says it’s the abs pump.

Thanks for you help

What code reader donyoubise and what is/are the exact error codes? Best use INPA if you have access to it.

It's possible the fuse to the ABS pump has either totally failed, or cracked. I know the later doesn't sound possible, but they are (often) big flat fuses, and crack with temperature variations. They will allow voltage to be supplied to the pump, but not current, bringing about ABS fault codes.
In the event of this being OK, it's usually the module that fails (not the pump itself). The module can usually be removed without removing the ABS hydraulic bit (4 bolts). Therefore it can be removed while still keeping the car mobile, even though it has no ABS function. This in turn means you don't need to bleed the ABS hydraulics, which is a real benefit.

Also I have a steering wheel angle sensor fault code. Would this also make the DCS lights come on and cause the ABS to stop working. I wondering if it’s this that’s cause the lights to come on not the ABS module.

Yes steering sensor will bring the lights on and this is more of a common fault than the pumps themselves

I had these faults on an old AUC e93 330i, it was under warranty at the time & it was a 2k repair job but apparently there’s a kit you can buy to do it cheaper.

Hi. Finally getting to the bottom of this. Found that if I clear the steering angle sensor fault code the lights go off. They come back on once the car has been parked for a while. So I’m guessing it’s this not the ABS pump that’s at fault. Has anyone purchased the Steering angle sensor repair kit that’s available. Looks like it would be easier to repair than replace as it won’t need to be reprogrammed.
Any advise would be welcome

Sticks.

A good used one will be cheaper still - they are shared with DSC equipped E39's. They rarely fail to be fair.

I did look at buying a second hand sensor but I read that it would need to be programmed to my car. Is this correct.

No programming needed, just re-initialisation to teach the car’s abs/dsc ecu where straight ahead is.

Hi. I have plugged in my scanner and when I go into the steering angle sensor information I am getting no change in the degree of steering angle when I’m turning the wheel. I was getting a reading of 727 degrees and no rotation rate. I have attached a picture

I cleared the steering angle sensor fault code and calibrated the steering angle sensor and the DSC light goes off. If I turn the car off and leave it for 5 mins the light is back on when I start the car. Can anyone clarify it it’s a faulty steering angle sensor

Thanks
