I need a diesel estate car for commute, kids, dog and mountain biking.

I want to buy from a dealer as I have a car to part-ex - which gives me around £10k to play with. Prepared to go a bit higher for the right car.

Preferences;

- 5-6 years old.
- Under 100k miles
- Xenon headlights.
- Auto/DSG.
- Black leather.

Suggestions?

Cheers.

This is my suggestion. Unbeatable value IMO. As a bonus (if you like it that is...) it's an interesting colour, instead of the default silver/black.

Edit, just noticed that that one is (unusually) manual. Maybe this one, no mention of the mileage?

I had a very similar set of criteria a few years ago. Ended up with a Vauxhall Astra. It may not be a very PH type of car, but for the money it was the newest and lowest mileage estate. The Astra is more practical than the insignia and was 100% reliable in my ownership, very comfy, practical, and well equipped.

Mondeos and Passat's are also worth looking at, but the best estate I've had was a Skoda superb.

I've always seen estates as working cars but it depends what you're looking for and if you are bothered about the badge.

I bought my wife a 520 M Sport touring in April this year (originally as a stop gap only - but has been great) came with 12 Months BMW warranty (bought from BMW).

Paid just shy of £13k, I expect they can be had for close to your £10k budget now?

More than fast enough, comfortable and circa 40 mpg (we like to press on)

Avensis Estate. Its Jap. Reliability as expected except for D4D engine and the electric handbrake - should you be unlucky in either case.

My first pick would be the Mondeo in Titanium spec they're hard to find (with Leather (look for the X Pack cars) but worth seeking out as they're the best FWD steer:

With that being said I'd look for 508SW GT they're very spacious swift & they have everything but the Kitchen sink inside are as reliable as anything out there but because of the badge they'll have lower mileage than cars with similar spec:

Alternatives:

Mazda6 Sport/SE L

Jaguar XF SE Business

V50 D5 SE Lux if you can live with the smaller boot

Subaru Outback

The VFM option is the Insignia:

I'm curious too, as S drives an Insignia estate for work! Admittedly the boot shape is impractical, but I can't imagine what else he could mean?

I was using the same criteria at the start of the year.

After trying e-class (uncomfortable seats), v70 (vocal engine, poor turning circle, iffy ride), a6 (dated interior, all viewed were average condition), 5-series and Superb I narrowed it down to a Superb and 5-series depending on what car(s) were available with the right history and were in properly excellent condition.

520d purchased, 18k miles later and it is a super all rounder, only expenditure being a couple of oil changes and some rear tyres.

Cheers

Chris

Believe it or not but yes - I've had both a 61 plate astra estate and a 63 plate insignia estate.

On paper, with the seats up, the insignia has the bigger boot. But the car has been overstyled and is not square. The astra has a squarer boot making it easier to use and you can get more stuff in. In the insignia the roof is curved, and the back of the boot is curved making it harder to fully load.

On paper, with the seats down the astra has the bigger boot.

Having had both cars with the same 2.0 diesel engine I preferred the Astra. The insignia was more refined, but I never gelled with the car whereas the Astra was more functional.

For the OP (if he is after a large estate) I'd recommend hunting out a Superb such as this one. I had one (elegance model, 170bhp auto) as a temporary company car for 10k miles. Excuse the pun, but I thought it was superb. Without doubt the best estate I've had, and I've had a few...

I ran a VRS 2.0 tdi Estate for 2 years and 50K miles.

Loads of space, great engine with good performance and economy. The rear tyres lasted the 50K miles ! Fronts 20K.
We've had load of VAG 2.0tdi's at 150K - 200K miles so mechanically they should be fine at this mileage.

Interior plastics are OK but can mark easily. My front bumper was resprayed due to stone chips so I would suspect this one would have similar. Not a problem but go and take a look to make sure you happy with the cosmetics.
Good point its auto and most likely m/way miles so little stress on engine. Also 18" wheels which ride much better than the 19" I had.
There is no Nav on this model which I would only consider if I was reselling within a few years. Otherwise take and look these are great cars.
