As I am now getting on a bit and have more than once tutted and shook my head at my 18yr old step-son due to his inability to converse with either me or his mum without monosyllabic grunts, his ability to sleep for most of the daylight hours only waking up once the sun has descended over the horizon and also the total disregard to be able to not understand that his bedroom floor is not the place to keep his wardrobe of clothes in differing piles, sorted only by worn, not worn, clean, not clean, I wanted to share this moment which lead me to see him in a whole different light.

My step-son has a small part time job in telesales, which keeps him in petrol money and beer tokens, however he starts an apprenticeship with a national communications company in January which looks like a cracking career opportunity. He got the job a few months ago and in my opinion has just been kicking around home with no desire to better himself, this has caused some grumbling in the household, but I have bit my tongue, hoping that he would see sense and see that he had a clear 3-4 months to do something with his time, however it seems to have passed him by and he has been happy sleeping and playing Fortnite on his Xbox. We tried to give him some guidance, however he has chosen the path of least resistance and played it safe, something that disappointed me as I was hoping that he would take time out to travel or do something to add to a CV, however it just wasn't for him.....

Xmas morning comes around and his sister takes great delight in ribbing him as he has only bought 3 presents for his mum and me, something that he just nods at, sits down on the sofa and starts to unwrap his presents, all the time keeping quite and then thanking us for his gifts. His sister has bought us several small presents and takes great delight in seeing us unwrap them, knowing that her brother has probably only bought us a token gift.

We then come to open my stepsons presents, one of which is a joint gift to me and my wife, it is a fairly large box and when unwrapped, inside is a plain cardboard box with an explosive sticker on the side? I thought that it must have been a box of fireworks, and thought that it was a strange gift, however I will express my delight and thank him once I open the box fully as I didn't want to disappoint him. I then opened this box and was blown away to read on the side of the cardboard box the words, Macbook Air.

The little sod had only gone out and purchased both his mother and me a brand new Macbook as a thank you for what we have done for him over the last few years, guiding him and showing patience whilst he sorts himself out. As you can guess, we were both blown away by his generosity and still can't quite believe that he would go to those lengths, this is something that although we both would have liked, we couldn't have gone out and bought without some serious saving.

It just goes to show that if you raise your kids right and install some virtues in them, eventually it will click into place and they develop into a young adult that you can be proud of.

I don't really know why I am posting this in here, just wanted the world to know that I am very proud of this young man, whom I have raised as my own since he was 5. (lump in my throat time)

Fair play to the fella, he must have had to shift a fair amount of smack to afford that.

Kidding of course, our elder son is at the start of his teenage years and starting to display similar late-sleeping, Fortnite-playing characteristics so hopefully he will come out the other side as rounded as yours sounds to be.

Hmm, cool story and all that, but given your first three paragraphs I'd be wondering whether there was a receipt for it. scratchchin

It's not clear... Has he saved up all the wages from his part time job to pay for these? Or just put it on your credit card?

You do realise it's actually a present to himself really... Wait for him to 'borrow' it and never see it again!

Let me get this straight.

You have raised a kid who at 18 doesn't do a lot, has no career, play xbox or sleeps all day. Yet he has bought a present you wanted and so you are proud.

A MacBook Air, and he gets to chill out for another year rent and bills free, and free food thrown in. Well done him hehe

Good on him, youngsters get a pretty bad rap these days but all the ones I know through my own son are a great bunch.

Just to answer a few questions from some very cynical posters, he does work and has done for a number of years. I don’t own a credit card, therefore I haven’t paid for it.

I thought it was a very sweet gesture from a young lad who is finally developing into a man.

There really isn’t anything further to read into this, folks just take it as it is.
