I've got a Mk2 Focus ST and am looking to get rid of it soon as I have had some issues with the car and the running costs are starting to take its toll and would like something a bit less thirsty. Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on any more hot hatches I should be taking a look at. Under 10k. Thanks for the help.

Depends if you want the same size car or could you survive with a smaller one

If the latter then fiesta ST

Smaller is fine. I like the Fiesta it's just half my family own Fiesta STs and I don't want to follow the trend. Also where I live I see Fiestas everywhere. I'm a fan of the Mk5 Golf gti but can't find many for sale near me.

Alfa Giulietta Cloverleaf?

I bought one to nip back and forward to work and it will do 35mpg being careful (mixture of back roads and dual carriageway) and 30mpg when I'm not being careful and have it in dynamic mode!

Problem coming from the ST will be you will miss the 5 pot noise!

What about a BMW 1 series? The faster ones are supposed to be good on fuel for what they are and maintain a nice noise with the 6 cylinders?

I'll take a look at the mk6 golf, the alfa and 1 series. Alfas never really appealed to me though to be honest.

Clio 200 (current model)? Personally I'd get a fiesta St though, miss mine a lot. Mk5 golf is boring and soulless.

I have an M135i that does 18-22 around town (driven sensibly) and 38 on a gentle run. I doubt it will be cheaper than an ST, it’s significantly more powerful.

I’d actually suggest a Golf GT TDI (180bhp) or maybe a 123 or 125d (221bhp and 0-60 in 6.3).

Perhaps more warm than hot but Octavia VRS? Particularly economical in the less fun diesel form.

The Clio 200 isn’t very economical and costs a lot to tax, £260 ish. Great fun though.
I’ve the Mk3 ST but I’m not sure if they’re within budget. Does an easy 30mpg and tax is £180.

What about the 208 Gti? Anyone have one or has had one? Looks a good car.

I was in a similar position to the OP - had a MK5 Golf GTI and needed something cheaper to run and less thirsty so opted for an Audi 1.4 TFSI with 150bhp and I've never looked back, it's a great little car which regularly returns 48mpg which I think is outstanding. Tax is £20 per year too!

Alternatively you can get the cheaper (but largely the same car) Seat Leon FR:

I’ve got a 2014 Mini Cooper S. 200bhp and 0-60 in 6.8 seconds yet will easily reach 50mpg on a motorway journey. Averages around 42mpg long term.

I had a BMW 123d for over 6 years and really liked it (high 40s mpg didn't hurt either), but I started to read about BMW N47 engine cam-chain issues - so I sold it and bought a Z4 Coupe!

The 130i has the same fantastic 3 litre straight 6 petrol engine, and is the only 1 Series I'd even look at now (apart from maybe an M135i, but that is going to need a different budget).
