We have a Chim 4.0 1999 reg. The engine has a very slight missfire - not feeling particulary smooth although difficult to tell and also has a slight ticking noise all the time. Sometimes it can be very lumpy but generally it starts and gets you from A - B without too much trouble. We taken it to a few garages who have said you'd need to take it apart to tell whats wrong but prob cam wear or fuel injection or something pretty drastic. We are also planning to go to Le Mans.... the question is will it last or not??????? A garage told us yesterday that it shouldn't go out of our town let alone to Le Mans but I just really don't know what to think!?!?
Our BIG dilema is do we take it (with sufficient brakedown cover) or try and find a replacement car in 6 weeks??? Is there anything we can do to help it such as use a certain oil, put in loads of fuel injector treatment, any other suggestions???
Please let me know what you think and also if we do drag it down there is there particular items you suggest we take incase it brakes???

If the garages think it's that serious then I wouldn't (personally) take it to Le Mans… it might be OK, but by the sounds of it, you could end with an even bigger bill.

I'm not sure where you're based, but it sounds like this sort of issue would be bread and butter stuff to Austec in Crawley, West Sussex.

There are lots of stories about people having bizarre, perplexing engine problems being diagnosed and remedied very quickly by them Austec boys...

Indeed, it has been there a few times but we're just sick of chucking money at it. Austec have said its an underlying issue within the engine prob due to general wear (only got 50,000 on clock). Anyway, they said it would mean stripping it down just for a diagnosis let alone fixing the thing, and i just don't think it will be done in time for Le Mans anyway. we are in such a predicament, I don't think we will find a replacement in time either!

Hmmm
Three threads you have started about this & its the only you have bothered to reply to...

If you dont have any mechanical knowledge i would take the advice you are getting from the mechanics...

Sorry if this sounds a bit harsh...

Sorry, I just wondered if other people had had similar underlying problems with there chims and whether its just the usual wear or if it will go bang?

If a garage has advised you to get it fixed and not drive it, then I would tend to go with their opinion.

The problem isn't going to go away (IIRC you posted about this in January) and it will only get worse and cause more damage - going on what you have said.

If you continue to use the car, you risk doing more damage and getting a larger bill.

To me it seems your options are;

1) Get it fixed
2) Wait for it to go bang

But its running a lot better than it did in January, that problem is not what we have now and we got rid of that issue by sraying WD40 in the Dissi cap (after going to and fro from the garage)!!!! It always has such illusive problems, i just wondered if others had had similar.

If you are in any doubt I suggest giving Dom or Jamie a ring at TVR Power. They rebuilt my engine at 52,000 miles. Its not as expensive as you might think for an RV8. There was a 10 day wait before they could do it, but I got they car back within in 10 days.

The guys at Austec really know what they're talking about. I would go with their advice, rather than from us on this Forum taking a few shots in the dark as to what your problem might be.

It sounds like driving it anywhere in its present state is like playing a game of Russian roulette, and trying to get it down to Le Mans is even worse.

I really sympathise with your predicament, but it really sounds like the best option is to get it into Austec and let them do whatever it takes to get it running properly again. No matter how long it takes, it's surely a better solution that waiting for a very expensive bang?

I would reinforce the reccomendation that you should take it down to Austec. They know whatthey are doing around TVRs, where as some garages probably don't. Could be somthing simple, like a new dizzy cap being needed or more serious.

Your car has a problem. Not fixing that problem will make it worse.

Get it fixed. If you don't want to spend the money, sell it.

Thats the thing though, TVRs arn't exactly purfect anyway in comparison to a full machine manufactured car like Ford, Vauxhall etc... Do you get TVRs that just aren't great runners??
