I have never been one for speed, but endurance is my forte. I set myself a challenge for 2018 to row 1,500,000 meters on my PS2. I have just completed my last 10,000 meters and have notched up 1,530,000 for the year. So I think that it is only right to try and beat that for 2019; it works out at about 3 10,000 meter sessions a week. Anyone else fancy going for it come the New Year, well from tomorrow actually!
I generally row at 02:10 to 02:18 pace, although my recent best was at 02:06 pace. I look back at my personal best of 38:22 for 10,000 meters back in 2002 and realise I am never going to get back there again!

We did have a million metre challenge on here in 2016 - all documented on the 2k thread - which I finished late November iirc.

If you do plenty of distance rowing then I think it's a great way to motivate yourself.

However it does become very focused on rowing and nothing else due to the distances required, as you state 3 x 10k needed every week.

I only did it as a general gym goer and it became a millstone round my neck to be honest as I became very focused on rowing as my cv sessions to the detriment of running etc. I did manage a marathon distance - 42k - in about 3 hours 28 minutes which I was pretty chuffed with as well as several HM's.

Obviously it can be combined with sprints, intervals and 5k's and 10k's with the odd HM for variety, but that 30k per week every week is not to be underestimated by anyone with less than 100% focus.

Best of luck to any and all.

PS2 rower? I have never heard of one of those .... I know the C2 models, water rowers, etc.

Nice to have targets, it definitely helps. Never say never on those pacing targets - you may surprise yourself. I'm plannning on getting my 2K row down another 7+ seconds in the next 4 weeks, going to be ruddy painful. Set yourself targets, then continually chip away at them.

Sorry, I did mean Concept 2 rower, not quite sure where I invented PS2 from! Perhaps from PM3 on the display, or I'm cracking up from too much rowing...
I have never been into running but have done a fair bit of sit down bike and cross trainer in the gym, but of late I have been concentrating on the rowing, which suits me well.

I only use mine once or twice a week, usually for 12x 500m or 8x 750m intervals. My 2k pb was an unremarkable 7:28 last year, so I would like to improve that a bit. Might try to focus a bit more on endurance rather than speed though for a while.

7:28 isn't too bad though, a mixture of endurance, intervals and rate ladders will see those times tumble.

October/November/December last year I was doing a load of endurance work for various C2 challenges. October I did 452km, November 564km and December was 534km (which is ridiculous, as I didn't do anything after Christmas Eve).

Speed work is fun - if you're looking at the 2k, then try simple things like 10x1 minute (1 minute rest), target is 2k pace-5 seconds. 500m intervals tended to be 8x500/3:30 rest, or 6x500/2:00 rest. Again, targeting 2k-5 seconds pace.

My favourite is trying to keep going on minute intervals for as long as possibly at your target 2k pace.

Forgive my ignorance, but are those rest periods not quite long for interval training? I've been limiting to 1:00 rest maximum between sets. Is there a reason you are having longer?

The rest period varies from piece to piece. In the case of these you're building up the sprint endurance, and you're supposed to be targeting a pace 5 seconds ahead of your target for 2k. The rest allows you to go faster on each interval. I know of plenty of people who use the 2 minutes or longer break on 500m intervals, pretty sure I need to be bringing these in over the next week or two to sharpen up for the 2k in February.

There are loads of options for such training, but the 8x500/3:30 was taken from The Pete Plan, which is a popular training routine. Although the Pete Plan isn't quite so prescriptive with its pacing suggestions.

Good to know, thanks for the info. I can go a bit easier on myself now hehe

I had an urge to laugh, but I gave 8x500/3:30. My legs were burning, lungs were burning from the 4th rep onwards. I thought 3:30 rest would actually make it quite easy. Instead you start developing a dread of the rest and urges to stop early ....

It really is an excellent workout, it's up to you what you do on pacing. Faster you go the more beer tokens you earn drink

(eta - I averaged 1:41 and now need new legs and think I've developed asthma)

Tried the 8x500m/3:30 last night and paced at 1:48 (which is around a 7:30 2K at pace-5sec). Could have taken it down a second or two, but felt ok. Will push it a bit more next time.

I'll probably do it again over the next couple of weeks, slightly getting on my own nerves due to knowing the pace I want to pull for 2k at the english indoors early february. For my 2k target pace I should be doing this 8x500 at around 1:38. The lung burn scares me.

But I did do a 10k PB this morning smile

I can pull 1:38, but no way I can sustain it for any length of time. Need to keep working at it!

Try 45s on with 1:30 rest.

45s is quite a nice time, it allows you enough time to get in to a rhythm, but isn't so long it ruins you. And it's sufficient rest that you can get quite a few reps in, so good for building up fitness.

Tried it again yesterday, energy levels not great but planned to row 1:47, but started too fast. managed the first 5 sets well below but my times just climbed from there. Need to be more disciplined with my pace I think and not just max it out on the first few sets.
