I've been looking for another job and, before applying to anywhere, I always read the company reviews on Glassdoor.

Companies that get negative reviews tend to say that it is like online product reviews and people only leave glowing reviews or a poor reviews but reviews of my current and various previous employers seem perfectly accurate.

I just wondered who else reads Glassdoor and how much it influences your job hunting decisions and if the reviews accurately reflect your experiences?

I do read it but like you've said it's often littered with disgruntled ex-employees. I tend to ignore these unless there's hundreds of them which will give you an idea of the type of company you're looking at.

Also look out for well written, entirely positive reviews as these are most likely written by the marketing team (I've seen it happen myself) to help with the ratings. These stand out like a sore thumb.

i see no harm with ex-employees posting reviews - I doubt very many are a pack of lies based on my own experience of putting a posting up just telling it how it is (or was). It would be a fairly pointless and uni-lateral website if it only provided glowing reviews and no tolerance of the less than glowing.

I look at other company reviews too and if they say run a mile I do exactly that - those posts arent just there for fun.

I went through a TUPE process a few years ago and found the company I was transferring to on Glassdoor. The reviews were all negative and made the whole process that little bit more fraught.

4 years on and frankly it's the best company I've ever worked for and everyone who TUPE'd with me agrees so I don't have much time for Glassdoor.

Pointless it is then....... Unfortunately I found that if the company pays to put ads on GD, they may refuse to post bad reviews.

Hmmmm like anything, you have to use your common sense. There is a spectrum and you have to decide where you sit :
