Holiday illness

I went on holiday with some friends in 2016 to Magaluf, and we had a strange experience. Everyone in the hotel, even outside of our party, seemed to have a really bad cough, we commented on it a lot at the time. We seemed to all get it too, and on return to UK many of us were ill for a week or so with flu-like symptoms, terrible cough, aching etc. Afterwards some of us seemed to also be victim to other things, at least 3 of us have terrible acid reflux and one with asthma, all new conditions that started at the same time. A number of our party claim that they have never quite felt well since; myself included. I have also had occasional shortness of breath which has continued to this day, and reduced liver function which is gradually going back to normal. In 2017 the hotel was closed after there was a legionella outbreak, where someone died. Could there be any link here?

Yes, there could be.

i've struggled to find any link of legionella to longer term conditions or symptoms. None of us was close to death, and it will all be very hard or impossible to prove.

trying to get an appointment. I had expressed concerns about various symptoms over the period and they didn't make the link for me.

google the hotel and look on tripadvisor for the reviews whilst you were there
the holiday company will try and cover anything up, I assume it is either TUI or Thomas Cook

Just to let you know, that if you wish to make to make a claim for compensation, you have 3 years from the start of your illness to do so

There may have been tons of claim made already but will be very difficult to find out, especially as most people did not realise there was a problem until they got home

it was booked direct with the hotel and the online complaints are a bit of a case of 'can't see the wood for the trees' as they are somewhat plentiful (I didn't book it!)

Was it actually Magaluf you stayed in? I post on the Majorca forums on Tripadvisor and seem to remember the Don Bigote in Palma Nova was closed because of a Legionnaires outbreak (its about half a mile from Magaluf for those that dont know) and Thomson moved all their customers out.

Sounds like too much of a coincidence to me, have you tried talking to the NHS 111 line? If they think you warrant it they’ll get you an appointment much quicker.

Definitely get that checked out B2, some nasty stuff can sit in the lungs waiting to do damage.
