Cat C write off
Discussion
Hi
I'm looking to buy a 1995 993. just ran a HPI check, and it has a "Category C write off" recorded against it.
I checked with the insurance company, and they said after 7 years they were happy with it and it wouldn't make much difference in the event of a claim as it has been on the road since and has been regularly MOT'd. The garage has known it for 5 years, and say it's okay.
My inclination is that if it's still on the road 7 years later, and has been serviced by the same people (a reputable non-Porsche garage) they'd know if there were any problems. Most porkers have had smashes of some sort - my current one included
Should I worry about it?

From being in a Cat C crash, - pic on profile.
It was hit very hard and although initally just front end damage, the rear jumped and Im sure there is further internal damage and would be concerned that the forces involved would/may have compromise the car if in a 2nd heavy impact.
I would not go for a cat C.

My 944 was a cat c. The damage incurred when the previous owner hit a lorry tyre on the motorway - front bumper and radiator damage only.
Yes, there are some cat c's that do have substantial damage, but others, especially older ones that quite literally the labour and parts costs make it uneconomical to repair.
For instance, if the 993 had a dented door and wing, this is pretty expensive bodywork to replace. But, if someone has already done the work, have it inspected to make sure it isn't two cars joined together then take it from there. They really are fantastic bargains if you know what you are looking for. Just be a bit careful and you can pick a bargain up.
I have gone through the whole process if you want me to take you through it, from picking the car up from the scrapyard, working on it, MOT, then vosa check.
Heres a pic of the finished article.
The car owes me £1000. 107k, leather full history, 3 owners. It certainly makes a lot of sense if you can see past the 'cat c' marker.

Absolutely, as daginge says, they are a lot cheaper than those that haven't had a ding. Not necessarily a bad thing though. I would be quite happy buying another following a good inspection.
I found that speaking to the previous owner was good, nice to have a record of what happened for any future owners.

Mike, I am really surprised they wrote yours off as a Cat C. Writing it off as a Cat D would have made absolutely no difference to the insurance records whatsoever - a write off is a write off insofaras that is concerned. I think they made a mistake in their categorisation (in your favour). But I do tke your ponit about the age of the car affecting whether it is written off or not.
I'd consider a Cat D if it were priced at 60% of the equivalent value of a non-written off car, but a Cat C - never.

Must admit Ruby, I think it should have been a cat D as well.
Literally all it needed was a fibreglass repair to the front bumper, undertray, and radiator....That was it. It is one of the nicer 944's I have seen. Since I spoke to the previous owner it confirmed that it has been very well looked after, with a great service history, and only 107k. Leather too.
Why on earth they cat c'd it I will never know, but I suppose it comes down to how much a 'new' bumper, radiator and undertray was from Porsche, plus labour. I suppose it came to quite a bit.
I'm happy with it.
