Does anyone know of nice places to stay in Calais?

Or, failing that, are there any nice towns/villages to stay in within about 1/2 hour of Calais.

Cheers,

Patrick.

Try www.viamichelin.com & click on Michelin Guides, Hotels - gives you approximate prices, star ratings - and directions!

I can help here. Get on the coast road heading west out of Calais. Approx 3 miles out of town you'll climb a hill with lots of German bunkers etc on it. Go down the other side round hairpin bends into a tiny village. Negotiate the sharp bends, and just as road swings left out of village, go straight on. Approx 20 yards on the right is a B&B farmhouse thing. I can personally highly recommend this place, it is amazing. If they've finished all the rooms now you should get in ok, we just turned up last June and got a room for the night. Three of us including breakfast was approx £60 if I remember correctly - but I have drunk a lot of wine since then! Hope this helps.

Forgot to add, there are two or three restaurants in the village, one next door to the B&B, so good evening food isnt an issue.

Cheers Steve,

Is there any chance you can remember what the village is called?

Thanks,

Patrick.

It's most likely the village of Escalles - that's the first place you come to after Sangatte on the coast road. If it's near the elevated view point of Cap Blanc-Nez then it's definately Escalles.

Bluestar66, that sounds like the place, just half a mile or so west of the view point, our room looked out onto it. I'll check tonight - if I remember - but you've described the place correctly, so I guess you've got the name right. You do go through Sangatte cos we said what a crap place that looked.

Here ya go chaps, this is the website of the place we stayed. http://ferme.eglise.chez.tiscali.fr/chambres.htm
Failing that, do a google search for gites de france, then narrow it down from there. But I'm sure the link above will get you there - hope you enjoy it, assuming you take my recommendation!

Shortly after Escalles, when heading West from Calais is the village of Wissant. If you're over on a booze cruise then pop in and eat a 4 course meal at the Hotel Normandie for €21.50. It's not spectacular, but very much so value for money - great wine list too.

I wouldn't advise going during the summer season - it's a real Jekyl and Hyde village!!!
