As per subject line, I did my research on the above criteria however it also had to fit x2 kids under the age of 3 in the rear as well.

I ended up with a stage 1 tuned Audi TTS! Does anyone know of a better car that fits the bill?

Bit late to post this but wondering what alternatives there could have been, in my head now that I have it - not much beats it!

Loads if you include a tune.

I suppose however size of the car was a factor, I wanted a coupe/convertible and semi decent mpg.

Stage 2 is on the cards also, not a lot of money to get it up to stage 2.

Getting kids into the back with car seats seems like a hassle in a car that size?

Yeah, seems way more hassle than it's worth. There's a sweet spot for a car like that with kids. Its around the time when they can climb in and out and do their seatbelts without help but are still small enough to tolerate the tiny seats. I'd say from about 4 or 5 to about 7 or 8.

There are lots of alternatives with more interesting engines and more space. Some of which offer a convertible option with rear seats (which the TTS doesn't) 335i, 135i, 645i, 650i, S5, CLK500 etc

There are cars out there but to me they look like a massive risk especially as you have little kids to worry about. I'd be tempted with getting a sports saloon/estate like a 335i rather than a hairy chested money pit of a once £100k sports car.

...
Common 335i issues

Fuel injector failure
Turbo wastegate failure - replacement turbochargers as there is no real fix
Electric water pump failure
Oil filter housing gasket leaks
Valve cover gasket leaks
High pressure fuel pump failure - linked to injector failure from rubber seal particles clogging injectors
DSC hydro pump failure

It depends on what you wanted from the car, my pick would be the CLK55 AMG it'll take you your children & all the kit with ease the drivetrain is pretty much bulletproof the spark plug change is the expensive service as there are 16 of them all of mine were faultless as is the CLK63 that's replaced them.

One like this which is a last of the line 55 with the 6 & 4 pot calipers, this one has every option but the air cooled seats:

Before I mapped mine it was producing 358bhp at the crank with 82k on the clock, these are very good fun the exhaust (once you add an X pipe) note feel special & you can lean on them.

Lexus LS460 might be worth a look? Under 6 seconds to 60, very comfortable. Pretty rare, but some funny interior colour combos out there biggrin
