Are there any tankbags that won’t scratch the tank?

I’m weighing up whether to get a magnetic tankbag, but are these literally a magnet for scratches? Or are they actually OK?

I’ve used a magnetic tank bag with no issues at all as it doesn’t move an inch.

One of these... Givi EA106B Easy-Magnet Tank Bag - Black https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01AUMVME0/ref=cm_sw_r...

Every magnetic tank bag I have used has scratched the tank. I'd suggest a Baglux. Expensive but quality kit that does exactly what you want.

SW Motech or Givi do tank bags that lock onto a ring that bolts on round the filler cap, this keeps them off the tank surface and makes fitting and removing dead easy.

I've got the same one and my experience is nothing but positive. I don't think it's scratched the tank at all, but I'm going to have a properly look now when I get home.

I use the Givi tanklock bags, there is zero chance of scratching your tank with it and they are such a simple solution.

I ruined the tank on my old FZR using a magnetic tank bag, I hadn't realised that it had picked up a pair of small pliers underneath on one of the magnets when I put it on, after a day of riding and removing the bag to fill the tank it was scratched to buggery.

I have a couple of sizes, a small one for wallet and sunglassies and a puncture repair kit and a bigger one for when I need to carry more stuff.

They are brilliant bits of kit and the tank rings are only £15 or so when you change bikes.

I think it's the SW Motech ones where you can get a 12V connector integrated in to the ring, useful for charging your phone.

I have a Baglux Minea, expandable bag with rucksack straps for when you take it off the bike and wander off, but the tank covers cost a few quid. There's a French company Topsellerie that make covers a bit cheaper that work with the Baglux bags.

If you use it a lot, it will dull the paint where the magnets "stick" to the tank. If you happen to get a little bit of rust stuck to the magnet then it will scratch the paint.

Ive used and still own a couple of magnetic tank bags for a decade or two and never had an issue with a scratched tank, as long as you take reasonable care of it and your tank and dont for example, plonk the bag magnetic side down on the deck when you fill up with petrol, you wont have any problems.

That said, I also have a givi tank lock bag now (due to the fact my new bike has a plastic tank...) and I like it very much, great system but if the next bike I buy has a steel tank again, id have no hesitation in using the mag bags again.

My tracer 700 had this style fitted OEM, when it got stolen I bought a MT09, still had the tank bag from the old one - I bought a lock ring as you described and it fits perfectly allowing me to use the orginal bag. Does lift slightly so no scratching. Very easy to fit as well (5 mins work).

Its a slight pain when filling up, but literally adds an extra minute or two - mine has a wire you pull to release the bag.

My bag was pretty much this one: https://yamabits.co.uk/yamaha-tank-bag-city-ymeftb... The extra ring I needed was £32. I easily fit heavy trousers and D lock in the bag.

I've used magnetic bags on all of my bikes with metal tanks, and on each one i've had scratches that i've had to polish out. The exception was a VFR800 VTEC, which didn't seem to get marked at all (massively thick paint?!).

A magnetic tank bag on my 929 has left it looking dull in places.

On my K1300S i use a tank lock ring with Givi bag (the tank cover is plastic so magnetic won't stick). It's brilliant. So good in fact that i'm going to flog my magnetic tank bag. Wouldn't go back now.

I use a Kriega tailpack adapter on the tank of my 1198. It scratches it.

I was using a magnetic tank bag for quite a while with no problems until one day somehow one of the magnets picked up a bit of swarf which scratched the tank quite badly.

I've switched to a clip-on one now with no problems.

The tank locks are the only real option to avoid scratching the tank. I guess it depends on how much of a detailing nerd you are as to what you call a scratch but all magnetic bags will leave marks.

This assumes a tankring’s available for your bike. For example, some bikes have fuel caps too far forward for tanklock systems to work.

(Though I guess my question’s been answered: it’s either a tanklock or scratches ... )

That’s true, doesn’t work for all bikes. I’d always prefer a tailpack over a tank bag but I guess it’s personal preference/pillion dependant.

If you didn't notice a pair of pliers then you probably deserve to have the tank scratched to buggery!

I used magnetic bags for years without any issues at all; always put them down somewhere clean, always swept my bare hand along the bottom before I placed it on the tank and i can't remember even once picking up a piece of crud that could have caused any damage.
