Company Car Tax - notify?
Discussion
I'm wondering whether it's worthwhile contacting HMRC about an accident I had last year which saw me in-and-out of hire cars for 98 days.
The simple story-
- Employed full-time, use of company car (hand-me-down) nice VW Golf GTD. Approx. cost to me ~ £145/ month
- Had a non-fault bump (hit from behind), car un-driveable.
- Complications with insurance meant no courtesy car (My employer and their insurance were Irish...)
- Complications also resulted in an extended timescale for repair, of 98 days / 3 months.
I then had the car back for a couple of months before actually changing jobs altogether (not because of the bump!)
I need to contact HMRC later this month anyway since my new car arrives on the 18th. I'm curious whether I should advise them about this period where I was effectively car-less, even though the costs of getting a hire car every couple of weeks were reimbursed by my employer (and I suspect will be put into their claim from the 3rd party eventually).
Now I know we're "only" talking about £435 but the reason for asking is that I've had to declare this non-fault accident (no claim) and it's affected our joint family car policy, so I'm looking to see if I can't get just a little bit of that back.
- Will HMRC want to know the details of all the cars I hired during those 98 days? (probably 8 cars, will struggle to get the details without asking the hire company = ballache)
- Will this just be more hassle than its' worth?
Thanks for reading my boring thread and thanks in advance for any help!

I think You will need to provide details of the replacement cars - the company car tax rules refer to the use of any vehicle provided as a consequence of your employment - ie, it includes vehicles provided by someone other than your employer, so you would be liable for tax on the benefit in kind, except perhaps for any de minimis period that applies (and I have no idea what that would be - don’t know if it’s the same now but in 1989 I lent my company car to a colleague for I think a month and I had to pay tax on it as the period without a car was too short)
