Dog Wagon Ideas
Discussion
Hey,
Looking for insperation.
Currently have a Merc C250D Estate and 3 medium dogs who fit quite happly in the estae.
One is on his last legs but we are about to adpot another one, collie x (we think) St. Bernard, who will be a bit of a big thing.
The current car might be a little to small for all 3 of them, so looking for ideas for what else to use.
Possible just to stick a roof box on the current car and stick him on the back seat, the other 2 in the boot, but thats not ideal.
I have around a 10-15k budget
Ideas are something 4x4ish (Wife loves pickups so maybe with a hard top) but other than that, I'm at a loss.
Cheers.

Sod the car..... I want to know how a collie x st Bernard works? My guess is there's some human intervention and a bit of man holding going on???
But...... If mum is the collie then that's got to be a bit eye-watering for her....
or
If mum is the St Bernard... how did the collie reach?
Either way, with the three dogs and one of them is a biggie.... how about a 4x4 VW Transporter?

Its an estimate guess that is crossed with a St B. He looks like he is but who knows and only 5 months old but big. And I dont want to think about which way the combo worked But...... If mum is the collie then that's got to be a bit eye-watering for her....

VW transporter is something I did think of but the wife hates the idea (no idea why). That said, she had zero say in the merc [url]
This is 4 months old (I think).

Not sure how a St Bernard will fare jumping high into a SUV type vehicle. You need a big big boot. Biggest are generally e-class, mondeo, passat and superb. Much bigger boots than you get in the typical 4x4s and SUV type.
This^^^ I wouldn't fancy helping a St Bernard into the boot after it had been swimming / rolling in "stuff"I’ve recently bought an older V70 for that very purpose to save getting our 3 series touring trashed.
So much more floor space and a vertical rear window mean they have plenty of room. The low bumper height will also help when they get older and require a bit of assistance getting into the car.

What a lovely looking dog!
Would you consider a second car? Perhaps a cheaper E class, Superb or even a people carrier as others have suggested. I know a lot of people have a 'dog car' and their normal car. We had friends with a Leon Burger and they had a Berlingo, not sure how well it would cope with more dogs though.

If I had a few decent size dogs I would seriously entertain a beater like a Berlingo or Doblo to keep the main car from getting trashed.
Just had a Yeti until recently & that was fine with a large, medium & a small dog because it’s very square.
Best dog and family wagon we had was a Discovery. Great car but do need looking after.
Have a new XC60 which is fine as we now just have a small & large dog.
Neighbour has two Pyreneans & has a brand new Transit for them.

We have a Legacy as a dog car (shed), does the job brilliantly 2004 model with a huge boot and flat load area, only have a working cocker but can fit her and my bike in easily. We do have a washable boot liner which helps a lot and these off Amazon have been a great help with wet dog car https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07GSZL25B/ref...
Much as I think about trading my Cayman and the Legacy in for a big quick estate, it would be ruined within a week so a "dog car" makes sense if you can do it (and can also recomend NFU multicar insurance if you go that way)

If you want a swift dogwagon how about a Insignia VXR estate.

S-Max. They're massive, not too plush that you'd worry about dogs in the back and great to drive. Your budget would stretch to the new shape which can be well kitted if you can find a Titanium Sport X Pack like this (a haggle away from your budget)
I have one and it's the perfect family car. It'd be great as a dog wagon.

Audi Q7 with the third row down has a massive boot, same with the Disco 4 which also has the dropped tailgate which could be handy to sit on whist drying dogs etc. Can't remember but aren't there some SUV's which have a button in the boot which allow the air suspension to drop for easier access to boot?
