the original post was made on a BMW forum .The pics are mental. I always wonder why those wrecked cars on the back of transporters cover up the reg plates !

I was wondering how they come back HPI clear, surely if a car is damaged or stolen it will be on the record as being damaged or stolen. So just exporting it out of the UK clears this record?Surely that's a loophole needs to be fixed?

I’ve bought plenty of Cat Registered cars, but as a bodyshop/resto workshop owner I only buy them in their damaged state and if/when I sell them I have plenty of damaged photos and a photographic record of repair and full catalogue of every new/repaired part and what has been carried out.
A few years back I bought an R50 MINI Cooper for a runabout, which was Cat D due to nothing more than a small dent in the bonnet. Thrashed it out slightly just to re-align the headlight and it was fully road worthy.
Now I used an Audi A1 as runabout/daily work hack, which I bought damaged. After stripping it it turned out to be the most badly damaged car I’ve ever bought (still not bad like any of the above, but did need a new flitch, which is further than I would normally go). I bought it blind as damaged/salvage, but didn’t disclose category and for the price I paid I wasn’t bothered. After repairing it I contacted the relevant authorities to check what category it was, and much to my surprise it wasn’t recorded at all.
The system is very flawed and some lightly damaged cars will get written off if the owners decide not to get them repaired, but just take the payout and get another car. Some insurers will add on the cost of storage, hire cars etc to the repair value, resulting in some cars getting written off etc.
The new Cat N and Cat S system is far superior in theory, but in practice the cars don’t get inspected thoroughly enough, so I’ve seen Cat N cars with structural damage and Cat S cars without any structural damage.
