I'm wondering how I would have stood had things turned out different.

Dual carraigeway, NSL limit - I accelerated away from a roundabout, using half throttle, but full rev range - the car is very loud, decat and sports exhaust, 131dB.

Got to 70mph in an instant and pulled into a gap in the traffic on the left and started to cruise.

I noticed blue lights about five cars back - they got closer and pulled in behind me, stopped the car and jumped out to talk face to face.

The policeman asked me what speed I was doing back at the roundabout and I said the truth, accelerated to 70 to which he said "and the rest - I had to do 80 to catch you"

He then let me go saying to watch my right foot, to which I said ok, goodnight.

Now, if I didn't have the sense to stay quiet and give him no back chat and had pushed the fact that if he had to do 80 to catch me, therefore I must have been doing a lower speed - ie, 70, where would I have stood if he'd tried to pin a speeding charge on me? Luckily, I know that you can't win in an argument with a policeman so I shut up, but I can't help but wonder what would have happened if he turned bolshy despite my submissiveness.

If he wanted to he could have charged you with speeding for just about any speed he choose to. Probably would have been dropped at the last minute but if it got to the Kangaroo in court you would have probably been found guilty.

Maybe he just wanted to have a look at you to ensure all was kosher. being defected resorted to a bit of road safety advice. Watch speed?

He was probably checking all was legit.

My dad got stopped many years ago and the copper looked round the car, ummmed and ahhhed and then said that one of his headlights was misaligned and shining into the rear view mirrors of cars in front. My dad had it checked, and of course there was nothing wrong. Sometimes the coppers nose isn't always correctly calibrated....

If your car really puts out 131db it means he could have arrested your for assault, as you are assaulting everyone as you drive as 130db is the threshold of pain

Indeed, if it really is 131dB the copper was negligent in not slapping a VDRS on you IMO. That is just stupidly and anti-socialy loud.

I have met and worked with many Police officers. I have never ever met one who 'gets off' on stopping motorists for any reason.

I have met one or two who are over zealous on occasions but that has nothing to do with 'getting off' and if the person stopped had not brought attention on themsleves in the first place, they would have avoided the situation completely!

Lol, thats a fairly stupid statement from the copper.

Of course he would have to do 80mph to catch you.

1. Because I assume to catch you he would have to close the distance and hence have to go faster.

2. Because i'm fairly sure your cerb, even at half throttle would be accelerating to 70mph alot quick than the coppers car and hence to cover the same distance in the same time he'd have to go faster to make up for his lack of acceleration.

I reckon he just stopped you on the off chance something was wrong with the car and/or to tell you to watch out, coppers about

But this is where the speed kills campaign really breaks down.

Not saying you are a numpty, but say you accelerated at full throttle to 70mph. You're a lot more likely to be involved in/cause an accident in that period of time accelerating than cruising at say 85mph

Any particular reason why?

Only if you stand at the rated distance - probably 1 metre.

144dB is when you need to start worrying.

I expect mindgam3 will explain his reasoning in due course, meanwhile may I offer my version.

When you drive at a more or less constant speed you are observing the scene around you and absorbing and processing the information at a steady rate, and this is a stable situation.

When you are accelerating at a rapid rate you need to quickly increase your own performance in terms of observing and evaluating information and acting on it. I think the effect of this sudden increase in the demand on your own mental processes is where the problem may lie. Unless you are able to make the necessary adjustments quickly there could be a mismatch between the speed of the car and your own internal processing to accord with that higher speed.

I'm sorry if I haven't explained that very well but I suspect the answer could be somewhere in that area.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

What constitutes 'bringing attention on themselves' to you?
If merely accelerating briskly to make good progress is bringing attention then there is something seriously wrong with the plod in question.

Lots of things constitute bringing attention to themsleves which could include having cropped hair, a disproportionaltely large forehead, protruding orbital bones over the eyes, a roman type nose and eyes too close together!

How about his loud exhaust which he decided to expel rapid excessive emmision from in their presence?

Is this your life's crusade

Are you as boring as this at parties?

FFS get a life and change the tune - perhaps hang out in some of the other forums and contribute rather than lurk and snipe with a reapeted monolog!!

Come on, if you plant the throttle on a loud car with a police car not far behind, you're going to provoke interest.

Obviously the copper was a bit clueless as to what Newton said a few hundred years ago, but I wouldn't be surprised if I got pulled after accelerating from the lights a bit quick.
