I think there is a whole section on driving roads somewhere in general gassing.

I've never done Cat and Fiddle yet, I think its on this years to do list.

I have a list of roads in NorthEast Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Dales. I know of some others in the Lakes and Derbyshire. Mind you the ones in the Lakes are frequented by caravans.

Along State Highway 58 otherwise called “Haywards Hill Road” and then out along the old State Highway 1 “Paekakariki Hill Road” as it’s now called. Call in at the chocolate factory store and then on to Waikanae beach for some fun and relaxation. Then back along the Centennial highway (State highway 1) and home again.

Kapiti island wildlife reserve from Waikanae beach:

Waikanae beach and Kapiti island from the Paekakariki hill road (the beach is a few kilometers long and there are usually only a few people standing on the beach – great to have fun on in the car):

Hayward’s hill road is about half an hour out of Wellington, New Zealand.

Oh yeah, very nice road, but usually too much traffic. Get there just before/after sunrise on a summer's day - needs to be warm enough to avoid frost/dew/mist. Plus the police air patrol worries you a bit.

Having said that, no need to go ultra-quick along the straights...just don't brake for the corners!!!

Beautiful…the countryside doesn’t look too bad either.

Yeah but a lot of that involves going to Wales!

A small price to pay just wind the windows up when approaching the locals!

I used to live, and sometimes commute, along the Cat and Fiddle road. The whole area is spectacular and scenic, although a little bleak in places at higher altitude. Despite many warnings from locals not to EVER underestimate the danger of that road, I was once lured into a battle between my Red-Rose Tuscan and a Suzuki GSXR1100. It was a titanic struggle which the bike eventually won by taking advantage of his ability to overtake on the white lines while passing and facing oncoming traffic. Shortly after that moment he very nearly self-terminated into a dry stone wall on a sharp bend and only survived by luck more than judgement. With sheep often wandering into the unfenced road and a very high accident toll, I would say the Cat & Fiddle road is not one to enjoy at speed.

I can't help thinking we really need good quality full length videos of all these runs

Preferably with the engine clearly audible rather than a music track, and driven "enthusiastically" but of course with due care and respect for the law and prevailing conditions...

If they were of good enough quality we could p'raps put them on DVD and sell them to raise funds for the hosting fees or whatever. DVDs also support multi channel sound, so you could select from music / in car / sat next to the exhaust.

What sort of gear would one need in order to get a decent quality result, and how expensive would it be to equip a car thus?

Best wishes all,
Dave.

I have to agree, I drove up the west coast of england then through glasgow on the way to John O' Groats and the further north I got, the better it was. Plus everyone leaves a decent gap between them and the car in front on the single lane stuff so you can overtake and move back into a line of traffic safely...a very nice change to at home!
