My £400 Jaaaag X Type

I've never really done this so thought I'd do a little thread on my new work horse.
I sold my car yesterday and needed something over the winter that is cheap and OK ish.

Looked at various cars online like Rover 75's, merc c270's, passat 1.9tdi's etc and then thought what I could get with awd and stumbled across these.

I've never been in one or even looked around one so went through the usual auction sites and saw this finishing in less than an hour and currently at £245.
One thing led to another and I bought it for £400.

Main reason was that the dealer selling it was just around the corner to me and obviously it was cheap.
The main reason I got it so cheap is that the engine light is on however this is the reason (thankfully)


The spec:
2003
2.5v6 (yes the 3.0 is better but you can't buy one for £400)
Auto
Full leather and everything works spot on except the drivers mirror doesn't like moving right.
98,000 miles
Last serviced at 72k
Probably rotten sills.

So I picked it up and to my surprise I actually quite like it. Not the colour I'd go for but it's actually a nice change from all my grey and black cars.
It's wafty, silky smooth and I got 26.7mpg on my drive home which is better than my last diesel car.

All in all, I actually like driving it and given what it actually is, for the money I'm well happy with it.
Biggest thing I hate is the wood effect trim inside. What an awful era of car to buy like this.
They're all the same.

Plans are to service it, replace some bushes, work out how to put a modern head unit in it and maybe tint the rear windows.

What do you know about the sills rotting on these?

According to my 5 minute Google session, pre 2004 cars suffered badly from sill rusting and some can get really bad.
Think on its mot it states it has slight corrosion or something like that so probably not too bad yet.

I don't mind it massively but I'd rather have something else but no idea what would work.

What diesel were you driving to equal less mpg?

I've only had boring family car diesels, but both of those averaged 52mpg/tank (vectra) and 57mpg/tank (sh!troen C4) respectively

X5 and Range Rovers

One thing I need to look into is isofix. Would be handy to have it so my youngest car seat would fit.

You can purchase the isofix brackets and they simply bolt in. It’s a 5 minute job as the holes are already there for them.

I had a similar one to this when my M5 shat it’s box and BMW decided to take an age to rebuild it (warranty work so think they did it when they could be arsed) haha

It was an 04, black, interior like yours, 2.5 AWD and from a local dealer too, he wanted £650, I got it for £500 with a full MOT and no advisories, it had no rot (garaged all its life) but it was a narrow garage, so both wing mirrors had to be replaced and the front was scuffed either side, a pal who’s a detailer sorted that for me as best as could be done.

Unfortunately I had to replace all 4 tyres as they were cracking, only 5 years old too! Think the standing in the garage is what did it...

Not powerful, but a very smooth waft bus and great for a cheap runabout

Some tasty MOT history but for £400 not much to lose. If it doesn't pass the next one you can just throw it on eBay again.

You wouldn't happen to know where to get one from would you?
Every post I've seen about it is that they don't make them any more and they never come up for sale.
All I can find on ebay is a generic one but no idea if they're actually good/safe.

No idea how you got that mpg. I bought one years ago as a daily stter and never saw anything like that, even on a long run.

Quite enjoyed it mind, even if I got the same age abuse as I was a similar age to yourself.

Clearly not ha.
It still doesn't make it any less boat like.

I can't really think of anything suitable to cover it with.
Normally when I buy cars it will come with carbon or piano black but neither of those would suit.

Given the underpinnings (not going to say the M word) I’d look at whether a Ford isofix bracket would fit. Genuine ones for the Focus are under 20 quid on eBay.
