Been feeling a bit under the weather for the last 12 months or so. Went to the docs. Told to do a sample. Came back with this H.Pylori - anyone else had this? Bunch of tablets to hopefully get rid of it.

I seem to recall that this was found to be a prime cause of stomach ulcers by an Australian doctor who deliberately infected himself and developed and ulcer. Antibiotics are apparently able to eliminate it. IINAD so do a search.

Quite correct!
H.Pylori bacterium was found to be main cause of duodenal ulcers, and not stress as was assumed at the time.
Powerful antacid drugs, proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole combined with antibiotics killed the h.pylori and subsequently ulcers cleared up.
My first job out of uni was promoting this drug treatment to GPs

Yep had it. Was told the the antibiotics would floor me. They didn't. Was fine. One occasion the world fell out my arse at a pace I just can't describe. Not had any problems since.

Don't know which antibiotics I was given now, but I had to have an ultrasonic guided biopsy of the prostate which takes place via that orifice that usually serves as a waste disposal chute. The needle is shot a dozen times or so through the wall of the bowel into the prostate and carries with it myriad microorganisms. As prophylaxis a couple of powerful antibiotics are administered prior to, during, and after the biopsy. Just one of these antibiotics is powerful enough to cure gonorrhoea at a stroke and I had two. My gastro-intestinal system took nearly a year to recover its normal function. It's quite fair to warn that strong antibiotics will have considerable side-effects.

I had it, diagnosed from a biopsy done while investigating reflux, and had a combination of two anti-biotics (Clarithromycin 500mg and Metronidazle 400mg, both twice per day) and a PPI. I had no symptoms before diagnosis and felt the same afterwards. The Consultant seemed amazed I'd completed the course of anti-biotics without any issues.

As nothing seemed to have changed, I asked her to re-test (by breath test) but she refused saying the protocol is to assume the anti-biotics worked. This is private too, so you think they'd be keen for the dosh.

Yeah I appreciate some will get ill.

I'd been doing insanity (the max interval training) and managed to continue doing it that week.

My pre symptoms had been pretty awful reflux and heart burn. I also had a slight allergy to peppers which didn't help.

Possibly not helped by a shortage of green ink?

I had this and caused some severe stomach pain, apparently it can leave the stomach vulnerable to further problems in the future so bare that in mind. I went on a course of antibiotics which seemed to fix things in the short term. I was also recommended omeprazole by my GP and after having taken 2 or 3 of them I looked into what they actually were and was horrified by some of the reading I did. Omeprazole seems to more or less stop the stomachs natural production of acid, this can be of benefit in the short term as stomach acid will antagonize any ulcer etc however a very worrying result of taking it is the stomach stops digesting food you eat. Food stays undigested in your gut and begins to rot. No nutrients are absorbed and in long term use cases I read this can lead to osteoporosis and a huge range of other health problems due to lack of nutrients. When you then stop using it the stomach will go into overdrive as it tries to counter the effects of the drug and stomach acid spikes this potentially causing more severe problems. (This is what I read, IANAD)

The natural alternative to this pernicious drug and what I found cured me almost immediately of any symptoms were

deglycerized liquorice
mastika/mastic gum
ginger root capsules

All of the above have powerful gut healing properties and don't of course have any of the side effects that proton pump inhibitors do. I still take mastic gum daily to maintain and strengthen my gut health.

Again, all of this is based on my own reading and my own experience but I feel strongly enough against omeprazole and the like to give my feedback, hopefully this helps.

I had it and it was utter misery, everything set it off and doubled me over, made me sweat with the pain.

Went to the doctors and had a rather stern, older lady who basically just harangued me about my diet, weight and pretty much everything, made me feel like it was my own fault as I liked spicy food occasionally, had a few drinks and was maybe a stone overweight. Told me to set my bed at an angle, not eat anything spicy, drink no booze and and lose weight.

I tried all that, to be honest I used to eat to fill my stomach to give it some relief as when it was full it seemed to soak up the acid, I went back and got the same doctor, same thing, waste of time.

Anyway, had another six months of misery and went back to the doctors, luckily she had departed (was going to ask for another one anyway) and the doctor I saw was professional but could tell he was pissed off about how I had been dealt with, he said he was going to test me for H Pylori, which he did and it came back positive.

He prescribed what looked like antibiotics for a horse, two, maybe three types and withing a week I was fine, like it had never happened, I had two years of that, Omeprazole was the only thing that gave me any relief.

Been fine since but still a bit bitter about it, so many occasions were spoilt for me due to the pain it caused, I cancelled stuff like nights out as my stomach wasnt up to it, remember spending a fortune taking the kids to places and being totally distracted by the burning in my stomach.

Just get the Antibiotics and you should be fine.

in New York with work at the moment.

Been given Clarithromycin, Amoxicillin 500g, and Lansoprazole Gastro Resistant Capsules.

Been taking them since about Thursday and just been out for lunch - on the way back felt fine and within 20mins or so of eating, bloating followed by a dash to the loo....

I also had great result taking mastic gum (advised by a nutritionalist(sp)) If I occasionally get a return of heartburn a couple of days of mastic gum and I return to normal again. Before the mastic gum I was feeling very poorly.

Had onset of reflux/heart burn for the best part of a year during which time I tried various anti-acids, change of diet etc.

Doctor suggested sample test which confirmed H.P - two sets of antibiotics taken simultaneously.

I suffered no side affects from the antibiotics and not had reflux or stomach pain since - 2 years now.

I had Duodenal Ulcer/H.Pylori back in 2011.

Whilst on the way to work at London Bridge station I saw a policeman and told him I felt unwell, he got me a chair, I then threw up and then passed out for a couple of minutes, an ambulance was called and I was taken to the hospital.

My ulcer was actually bleeding, which gave me some dizzy spells and very dark stools over the pass week, but I just thought it was some of the things I ate like sticky toffee pudding, black pudding, spaghetti with squid ink.

I had to have a blood transfusion and had gastrascopy/endoscope, after that I was put on a 72 hour antibiotic drip and then released from hospital with a month supply of Amoxicillin and Lansoprazole.
My stomach was calmer after had Lansoprazole, but when it ran out I used my fathers Omeprazole tablets, then started using Manuka honey, which also help calm my stomach as well as occasional acid reflux.

I was told I could not give blood anymore and to avoid acidic and spicy food, I can handle mild heat, but anything more I start to sweat, I even have trouble eating salt and vinegar crisps.

I was diagnosed with it before Christmas

1000mg Amoxicillin and some barrier type tablets to protect my stomach and others called Heliclar, and it was gone in 2 weeks. Retest is only a breath test.

I’m convinced there is a benefit to keeping your gut flora as diverse as practical - that is a common feature found in studies of populations with the highest longevity

As western diets are generally crap for this, some sort of supplement ‘yakult’ etc helps in this.

I think the link between diversity of gut flora and avoidance of h.pylori problems is there.
