Back in early December the knuckle of my thumb (at the wrist) took a good whack.. after the initial pain had gone, it's swelled up and although I can move my thumb it was in some discomfort.

Roll forward a month and I've been wearing a brace to steady the thumb after reading some info on-line, however I struggle to open bottles or put any real pressure on my thumb, which has meant weeks off from the gym and cycling etc.

I went to the docs last week, who took a casual look and said there was nothing he could do there and then, if the pain/swelling persisted come back in 3-4 weeks...

Rightly or wrongly I went out on my MTB yesterday into Wales and the descents were killing me, to the paint where it was less painful to move my thumb above the bar.

I think it's fractured, maybe not a full break but something, does anyone have any experience of the above and timescales to heal.... I'm worried 3-4 weeks will pass and returning to the docs will be pointless, and I could be taking another course of action now to a) fully understand the injury b) progress whatever is required to fix the issue.

History, Xray. diagnosis, fracture clinic, Orthopaedic Surgeon (runs #clinic) , healing, rehab

In that order

I broke my thumb about 6 years ago riding my motorbike off road, and the doctors in spain wrongly told me it was ligament damage, and that because I could move it, I was fine. Flew back to the UK a couple days later and had xrays on it which confirmed it was broken. Operation the next day, the lot.

Skip going to the GP and go straight to A&E and get it X-Ray'd. They'll be able to take a proper look at it.

I'd be wanting an x-ray first and then referral to fracture clinic. Bones tend to heal within 6 weeks but there are also very important ligaments around the thumb. Also need to rule out scaphoid fracture which frequently do not unite and may require surgery. Seek a second opinion from the surgery and request an x-ray. ED possibly would send you to your GP depending on how fussy they are being about the time that's elapsed since injury.
