Dam Busters & 100 Greatest War Films , C4 7pm

My personal choice for best war film is followed by a show listing just what is the best. But will C4 go all PC on us and edit the film to cut out the name of Guy Gibson's dog? £10 says they will.
Might also have to dig out my copy of Enemy Coast Ahead....

Just as a side note, did anyone see the VE special on the BBC when Richard Todd (Guy Gibson in The Dam Busters) went back to Normandy to retrace his movements, he was in the parachute regiment and was one of the first dropped behind enemey lines during D-Day as part of the 6th Airborne.

After expeciencing the real events he went on to make The Longest Day, the film of the Normandy Invasion.

He played Major John Howard(?) who led the glider attack on the Pegasus bridge in the film the Longest Day. He was in a drop later on to help secure it I seem to remember from a book?

The Dambusters has, what I consider the finest one line put down in Cinema History...............



Barnes Wallis (Michael Redgrave) goes into the war ministry office to see if he could obtain a bomber to carry out his "bouncing bomb" trials........

The ministry man says to Wallis..."Don't you know there's a war on, aircraft are in short supply, what possible reason could I give them, that they would lend you a Wellington bomber???".....

Wallis replies......."Well perhaps if you tell them I designed it, do you think that might help?????"

Show the film in it's complete form as it is based on historical fact. Guy Gibson had a dog called n*gger, it's no use changing history to suit todays PC standards.

The technical details of how the "bomb" (it was really a bloody big depth charge) were not released until 1973.
