My BMW is just coming out of manufactures 3 year warranty , and i want to buy an extended warranty. Main dealer quote over £650 pa which seems high Vehicle only done 34,000 miles .. It’s an X6 .Diesel .Anyone know of or have experience of a good insurance warranty that includes engine ,gearbox , drive shaft mechanics and electrics etc ?
My son took out an insurance warranty on his 318 BMW and when he had an injector fault claim they revered him to a Halfords Auto Centre , who did not have proper tools, know how to
undertake the job , and they waisted 3 days before saying go back to warranty providers.
Just looking for recommendation on a good warranty !

I would say go for the BMW one.

On the forums here there are generally 2 different opinions on warranties:

BMW warranty - Nothing but good stories
3rd Party warranty - Lots of bad stories

Have you looked at any 3rd party ones? I would imagine the difference in price wouldn't be that much.

All day long pay for the BMW one. You might save a bit by opting for a third party one but would you really want to be enthalled in something like this?

I realise this isn't much help, but some anecdotes to make you feel better about going it alone without the warranty. I'm on my 7th BMW and have taken three of them to around 150k miles. 5 have been 6cyl petrol, but my current and last ones have both been E90 320ds, and I've done a total of 147k miles in those two diesels over 8 years, with both just out of warranty when I bought them. The last I took from 49k miles to 150k and the current one I bought at 69k miles and is currently on 115k. I've had no issues at all with my current '10 E90, but with the '07 E90 I had a turbo go at about 90k miles and had a reconditioned one fitted very quickly and easily by a BMW specialist for £1500. Services have been £120-£150 per year through the same specialist. The extended warranty over that time period would have cost me more, and I was unlucky to have that turbo go. I know a fair few turbos do fail, but I bet it's not every single car, and even on my 1:2 ratio I'm still better off without the warranty.

I think the question was BMW Warranty v Third Party Warranty, rather than Warranty v No Warranty though.

Theres an awful lot to go wrong with an X6 and i'd wholly be putting a BMW warranty on it.

yes Thus my opening line. You are right, yes, there's a lot more to go wrong. Also, an X6 is also a heavy beast and that means more wear on components than in my relatively flyweight 3. Furthermore, the weight's high up, so the forces on components will be greater as that weight pitches around.

To answer the OP's question, I would go BMW every time. They have more guaranteed expertise than the average unknown place you may end up with third party, and the have considerable financial welly if things go really bad.

Is this an extension of the terms of BMW's factory warranty, or a warranty that BMW are selling but is actually when inspected a 3rd party product that doesn't cover nearly as much??

(I thought the extended factory warranty option was only available at initial purchase, could be wrong though)

BMW Warranty without a doubt. You can alter the excess which might bring the annual fee down slightly.
It includes recovery too so you don't need to allow for that cost elsewhere.

To all intents and purposes, its an extension of the factory warranty, although I seem to recall its run by a 3rd party for BMW, but, it works the same as the 3 year warranty in my experience. Had some big fixes using it in the 4th and 5th years on my 135i, and there was no quibbles, no issues, and it's marked against the car on the system its under extended warranty.

BMW warranty for me everytime, wouldn't even consider trying to save a hundred quid per year on a X6 for extending the warranty into 4 and 5 years, or up to the 60k miles mark, after which is does get somewhat more expensive.

That’s not half bad.

Have a read if the M5 warranty direct thread and then see if an after market warranty is what you want.

It’s a no brainer

Especially when European emergency assist with car hire, hotels, onward travel and vehicle repatriation is included

I have it on my 4 year old X3 and 13 year old Z4

The Z4 threw £2.5k of ECU and ABS sensor and rear springs last year .. cost me £100

X3 needed some sensor thing

When an adaptive LED headlight is £1500 and an Idrive screen £2k let alone all the other gubbins that could go wrong

I’m now on my 5th year of ownership of a
1 series and have had the BMW warranty for the last 2 years since the initial 3 years ran out.

I’m paying not a huge amount less than the OP so it sounds a bit of a bargain for an X6.

Any other warranty is nearly worthless. I had a full Supercharger replacement on an Alpina B5 at a cost of £5k+ without the slightest question on a BMW extended warranty.

I maintain an extended warranty on a 640d with every option including night vision etc. If I strip out the value of full European breakdown the £65 a month I pay is amazing value to cover the albeit remote risk of an engine/gearbox or any of about 20 ecus, digital displays or complex radar sensors.

I bought a 750i without warranty and it required a full gearbox rebuild at 140k miles, which even at an independent gearbox expert was £3k. That’s four years warranty payments that would have been covered in one event if I’d had one.

The independent warranties are commonly known to try to wriggle out of claims.

Go for the BMW warranty. I had it on my previous car, and will be adding it to the current one this month. Mine’s around £1,100 for the fully year for fully comp no excess coverage - can drop it to around £650 with £250 excess. Currently pondering which to do - has no excess the last time around, but this time might have the excess and just think of it as cover for “big” problems...
