BMW E90 Issues - Any Help?
Discussion
Hi all,
I've got a 2008 BMW 318i, been having some problems as of late. Last week the car when idle, was shuddering. (That feeling of when the cars about to stall out) and I had a blinking MIL on the dash. Luckily I was near home so I parked up and hooked up the obd to see what was up.
These are the codes that it come up with:
- 2AF0: Nitrogen oxide sensor
- 29CF: Combustion misfires, Cylinder 3
The spark plugs & ignition coils are pretty much new so I don't see them being an issue, I've checked for dirt/bad connections etc.
Anyone had anything like this before? Or know anything about it? A
A local mechanic mentioned I would have to take it to a garage to have the exhaust removed/repaired/replaced. Would like a heads up so I know what I'm currently dealing with & how to proceed. Any help is much appreciated!

NoX sensor - for Nitrogen Oxides. It's a small control unit that bolts into the tunnel about halfway along and has a probe in the exhaust. They;'re a common failure but they're only £400 from BMW (!).I've got a 2008 BMW 318i, been having some problems as of late. Last week the car when idle, was shuddering. Don't bother with a cheaper NGK one, they're crap.
Is the exhaust blowing?
Misfire; could be plugs/coils but if they are new Bosch, it won't be them. Injectors are next. Take the engine top cover off and get the numbers from the tops. If they are original Piezo units, they are ripe for replacement. They are about £250 each plus steel fuel pipes, fitting and coding. See the pic below for number location.
If you were thinking of changing the car, I'd do it now. These things can rack up some very big invoices very quickly and they're a b
d to fix. Some just cannot be fixed and just misfire no matter what. Could be an injector spiking the NoX sensor.Had it long? And how many miles?

Hi,
Sorry for the late reply. Because im a new user I wasnt able to gain access to the forums due to some restriction.
Cars mileage is 62000. The only symptoms I have are the heavy vibration on idle, the rev limiter hovers around 600ish and feels as if its about to stall out. After that persists, the engine management light will come on, flash for a while and then disappeare.
All the spark plugs & ignition coils are brand new & ive checked the connections, they all seem fine so im assuming it could be injector like you mentioned. Do you think if it was a faulty injector, that could be the reason for the nox sensor flagging up?
I just dont want to change the nox sensor only to find out it wasnt that, if that makes sense.
Im in two minds about repairing the car or selling it as ive heard many stories of these engines & the racking up of invoices.

Ignore the box sensor for the minute - it won’t be making it misfire. How new are the plugs and coils? If really new then u may have a diff one. Injectors are common for failing - there is a place that refurbs them tho.
Swap coil and plug from cylinder 3 and put on different cylinders, clear fault codes and then run it till it logs a fault and check if it’s moved with either the coil or plug. If it hasn’t moved then u have at least ruled out them components.
You can swap injectors to do the same sort of diagnosis but u need to code it and it’s a bit more faff
