Need to get a new daily this weekend.

What something in and around the 200bhp bracket that will give me 40-50 miles and be pretty solid and reliable.

Basically narrowed it down to 2012 Cooper Clubman S or a 2012 Diesel VRS

Questions:

1. Anything wrong with either of these cars?
2. Am I missing any cars that I should be looking at?

Thanks in advance

Auto/manual? Annual mileage?

An Octavia VRS makes a great daily, though I may be a little biased!

I had the same budget and was also wanting a Cooper S clubman but ended up buying an A3 TDI Black Edition.

With the Mini make sure its the N18 version which I'm sure is 2010+. N18 seems to be more reliable but I'd check its got a good history, to prevent any timing chain/tensioner issues. Also the rear door is on the road side in the UK - could be a bit of a pain.

I was in the same position a year or so ago having decided I no longer needed my 2.0 TDI A1.

I looked at all manner of cars and despite being a little bit of a VAG fan boy (looking at S3s/ Edition30s, TTS etc), I ended up with a 2010 Clubman S.

Since I have sorted the suspension and fitted lighter wheels but everything else is as designed. It is great fun to hoon around in, for longer commutes it is happy enough to sit with the cruise control on and munch the miles with ease.

I think the Clubman is much overlooked as a car, it feels more settled than the Cooper S due to its slightly longer wheel base. As mentioned aim for the N18 engined (slightly less issues) Cooper S and then swap out the runflats.
The high pressure fuel pump on mine has just gone (a job for the weekend), all the Cooper S variants are plagued with this.

Mini Clubman S with the N18 engine are hard to come by. There is never more than a few of them up for sale. They hold their value well.

£8k will get you one, but it won't have many of the desirable options.

I see the suggestion about for the Alfa. Drive one before committing to one. There is nowhere to put your left foot and it is annoying.

There is a guy with a thread open right now who has these cars. Might be worth asking him about them in there as he's looking to move on from both.

If you want a fun drive then the Mini will win hands down vs a vag product

you might struggle for a n18 engined clubman at 8k?

if your doing alot of motorway driving or long distance i would go for a more relaxed car to be fair like the VRS
