I'm sure this topic has been done to death but there seems to be a real lack of clarity. Some people say they stop you on the spot, some say NIP in the post etc..

I was doing about 40mph in a 30 and noticed a copper on the pavement in a hi-vis jacket using her handheld speed gun. As I was passing her she lowered her gun as to look at the back of it. I came back down the same road in the opposite direction no more than 10 mins later and she was gone. I know I'm a knob for straying that far over the limit etc.. I am just trying to understand what to expect.

I can imagine the lowering of her gun was her taking my reg down or something?

Cheers in advance.

Or you might not.

you'll know for certain within 15 days but:

Speed guns often now incorporate video so you may get a NIP letter over the next 15 days.

Alternatively an indicated 40mph may be a "REAL" 36-37mph, less if you were going fractionally under an in indicated 40mph.....so if you were speeding and the speed gun doesn't have video you may have got lucky and come under her "pull them over" threshold - bigger fish
