Hi all,

I have an option to buy a TVR 5 litre, internally balanced, cross bolted short block, minus rods and pistons. There is no flywheel, heads nor front cover.

The engine has been described to me having done 23k miles and is very good condition.

Need to make an offer...but I've got absolutely no idea were to start.

Any ideas?

Interesting, does it have top hat liners?

As a guide, the new blocks when they were available were £1200 but not available now.

So, at a guess 500-1000, plus money for the crank as I assume it's included as it says balanced but all depends on rarity and availability.

Also very important is whether it has 4 bolt mains.

So early TVR 5 litre blocks did not..

Showing my lack of knowledge here, but does the crank need to have a flywheel to be balanced?

No.

Just crank pistons and rods.

Front pulley, flywheel and clutch can be individually balanced.

You can balance the internals without the flywheel or damper. These can be balanced afterwards.

Unless you are TVR and balance the whole lot in one go as it's cheaper.
